92 Accord LX Vibration problem
I have 92 Accord LX, Auto transmission with 240K. I drive 200 miles a day. I know I am expecting too much from the car.
The following are the problems:
1.Vibration especially at higher speeds (60+) either at accelerating or at decelarating.
Showed to numerous mechanics including dealership. Nothing happened ! In the mean time I changed cables, plugs and gasket coz one mechanic noticed that there is oil in plugs. Now it is fine. Recently radiator cracked, so replaced with brand new, the oil drain plug slipped, so has to change oil pan. Also replaced front motor mount. Changed transmission oil (flush). After every repair the vibration/noise seemed to go for a day or two before reappearing. Any thoughts ???
2. This happens early in the morning. Once you start the car, the rpm is high (I believe it is normal for every car). I also notice a squeaking sound (happens only in morning). Once the radiator fan starts, there is vibration associated (happens only in morning). Any thoughts??
YES The steering wheel vibrates too...

Re: (lv6l)
Yes the steering wheel vibrates too. As I mentioned this happens at speeds above 60. This vibration is associated with low intensity rattling sound.

When the steering shakes, does the car's motor feel different? Like does it feel like it's sluggish for a bit at the time, or does car performance change in any way?

Re: (lv6l)
Nope, the car performance doesnt look like changing. Since it happens generally over 60, there is a good chance I might not feel anything. As I mentioned the noise and vibration comes together.

If it happens only over 60mph and car's performance seems to be fine, I would assume it's the tires/alignment/suspension.
It could either be too high of a tire pressure. You can check by looking on your tire and find the max psi and get yourself a tire pressure gauge and see where it stands. Normally you gain more psi as you go faster, so when you pump your tire to already max at a stand still, going up to 60+ mph will cause the tire to be over pressure and cause your steering to start shaking.
Another thing could be alignment, the alignment could be off causing each wheel to point to a different directions, this again might not be noticeable by looking or driving but again at high speed when you have your passenger tire pointing one direction and your driver side tire pointing another direction it can cause your steering to shake as well.
One more thing is your suspension, you could either have a blown shock absorber on one side causing your car's body to shift it's weight more to one side, so when going at high speed with one side of the car more heavy the car's suspension will naturally try to keep it straight causing shaking back and fourth.
One last thing that could be the problem is tire not being balance. When a tire is not balance correctly with weights it will for sure give you shaking steering wheels.
I say check your tire pressure, then go check to see if your tire are balance, those are the easiest and cheapest to check first, when those don't cure your problem go bring it to an alignment shop and have them check the alignment. I recommend going to a alignment shop that uses lasers to align your car. It's more accurate that way. I would assume a good mechanic will know this and point it out to you. But you mention you brought it to a few mechanic and even the dealership and they all scratch their heads. Try an alignment shop, they specialize in things like these.
Keep me updated, Good luck.

Re: (lv6l)
Thanks a lot for your detailed reply LV. I forgot to mention that I did the 4 wheel allignment with dealership (at least the dealer said he did that and billed me). Two days it was fine and again the vibration and noise came up. I apologize I forgot to mention that.
I think I will give a shot for shock absorbers!
Thank you again for your detailed answer. I really appreciate your time and support.

Most of what you wrote is untrue.
1) Tires do not gain pressure due to speed, the pressure increases with heat.
2) Over inflated tires do not shake
3) If the toe (wheels pointing in or out) was off, it would not cause a vibration, it would cause stiff steering, and you would see the tires obviously chewed up if this was the case.
4) blown shocks will not make the car vibrate, they will only make the car bouncy going over bumps.
The only thing you said that is true is the tires could be out of balance. However, tires that are not balanced dont cause a noise.
I would say, get your tires balanced, but I would also have the CV shafts checked. When the CV joints start to wear out they can start to shake and that could cause your vibration.
Also, when you go to a shop/dealership make sure you are as discriptive as possible with the problem, and if you dont speak english well, or whatever language the shop normally used, ask to go on a test drive with the tech that is working on your car so you can show them when the car does the vibration, and what conditions it does it in.

But wouldn't when you go faster you're tire would heat up therefore increasing tire pressure?
I never said both shock, I said one, if one shock was blown the alignment will be thrown off and this is why I said what I said. What I could of added to help my statement is if one of your two springs are going bad. This could throw off the alignment.
And I never said an unbalance tire cause noise.

1) I never said that you said a unbalanced tire would cause noise, I am ruleing that out as a likly cause since he is looking for something that is causing a vibration AND NOISE.
2) Driving on the tires does make them hot, but its not how fast you are going that makes them hot, its movement. So, even at slow speeds, the air inside will only expand soo much.
3) blown shocks DO NOT throw off the alignment, not even 1. Shocks are called shock ABSORBERS for a reason. they absorbe the force of bumps and dampen the spring so that the car doesnt bounce, no control over alignment.
If a spring was sagging, it still wouldent cause a vibration. alignment will almost never cause a vibration period. So, to tell him to go out and pay for an alignment that will in no way solve his problem is useless.

Re: (JDM_DC4_Fanatic)
i recently had this same problem and it was my tie rod end's were bad or "outer tie rod's" after they were replaced and the front wheels realigned it was perfect.

You could easily also have a bent wheel which will cause a vibration and will be intensified because of the misalignment with road contact. And yes, one strut or shock being worn out can easily cause a vibration. Have you ever followed a car with a worn shock or strut, watching one tire bounce incessantly as it drives down the road?

blown struts or springs or alignment DO NOT cause vibrations. In my 6+ years of experiece workin in garages I have never seen any of those factors cause vibrations.
He is either looking at a bent wheel, but that wouldent explain the noise, out of balance tires, but that also wouldent explain the noise.
There are a number of things it could be, none of which can be diagnosed over the internet with limited information, and a whole lot of bullshit theories getting spewed out of unknowing people. Go to any garage and ask them if tire pressure, blown shocks, misalignment or sagging springs will cause a vibration and noise, they will slap you on the spot.
My best guess as to what the problem is, is either a wheel bearing or CV shaft, as they both will vibrate at higher speeds, and they both make noise when they wear out.
Lets try and keep this on topic, and realise that what you are saying is not relevent or correct to this situiation and move on.

Re: (JDM_DC4_Fanatic)
Thank you very much for your replies. I also replaced front drivers side axle too and as I mentioned did wheel alignment too. The vibration/noise seems to recede for one day before coming back.
However it does feel rough when I pass through bumps. I also have 99accord, when i drive this car through the same bumps (in my neighborhood), I wont feel anything. But 92 accord will shakes a lot with rough vibration.

I think you need to explain the problem better. You say it shakes going over bumps, but it happens in the morning when the fan comes on the car shakes?

Well, you could certainly have worn shocks in addition to whatever is causing your wheel vibration. I agree that I don't think worn shocks can cause vibration though. In fact, with 240k miles, if you're on the original shocks, they probably are fairly worn.

More clear question
Let me explain the problem again. I apologize for my not so clear explanation.
1.Vibration especially at higher speeds (60+) either at accelerating or at decelarating (steering vibrates too) vibration associated with rattling sound.
Showed to numerous mechanics including dealership. Nothing happened ! In the mean time
I changed cables, plugs and gasket coz one mechanic noticed that there is oil in plugs. Now there is no oil in plugs.
Recently radiator cracked, so replaced with brand new.
The oil drain plug slipped, so has to change oil pan.
Also replaced front motor mount.
Changed transmission oil (flush with dealership).
Did 4 wheel alignment at dealership.
Changed driver side axle (dealership)
After every repair the vibration/noise seemed to go for a day or two before reappearing. Any thoughts ???
2. This happens only in the early morning. Once you start the car, the rpm is high (I believe it is normal for every car). I also notice a squeaking sound or whistle (happens only in morning). Once the radiator fan starts, there is vibration associated (happens only in morning). All this in Parking mode. Any thoughts??
3. Whenever I go through the bumps, car shakes and you can easily feel the bumps. This does not happen with my 99 accord on the same bumps.
I believe there are multiple problems here. I am not sure where to start the repairs.
