Hi, I have been running my fan lots this winter and now it is whining 90% of the time. Is this a sign to clean it or to change it out? Is it recommended to install a reconditioned fan in this situation? Thank you for your suggestions in advance.

It could be a bearing in the motor going bad.

Since getting the motor out on a 5th gen is pretty easy I would pull it and check it out.

A new blower motor does not cost that much. One warning - many of the aftermarket motors do not come with the "pigtail" - just two wires and you have to splice the wires from the new motor to the factory "pigtail".

What can happen is since the motor is bi-directional you can splice the motor in such a way it spins the wrong way - if this happens there will be almost no air flow thru the vents.

So since the old one is still working - when you remove the one in the car now, go ahead and connect the factory wires back to it and turn the blower on and note which way the "cage" is turning. Then IF you replace the motor be sure to check that the new one is turning in the same direction.

I can't even remember how many times someone has wired a new motor the wrong way and runs into a "no - low air flow from the vents"

I've found everything from broken fins to leaves to dead mice in the fan. Best to open her up and take a peek. Spin in your hand. Should be a nice smooth motion, if not swap out,
