01' 2.3L ...Timing Belt...Interference Motor???
Been needing to get my timing belt changed for several months but seems like there's just never enough time.
Question 1.... Is the 2.3 in my '01 an interference type engine? Is it going to break stuff if the timing belt does break?
Question 2.... I'm a little handicapped from a goofy stroke I had a couple of years ago. Is the timing belt change something a slightly gimpy shadetree mechanic can do, or is it best left to a non-gimpy professional. I have changed belts on lots of different engines in the past but not sure I want to tackle this one if it's very difficult at all.

I think the hardest and I do mean the hardest part about changing the timing belt is dependent on what kind of tools you have. I let a mechanic do it and he couldn't get it off with an impact gun. So he used a 2 or 3 ft. loooong bar and put pretty good amount of strength in it to loosen it. Without the proper tools, it'll be nearly impossible to break that crank pulley bolt loose. There are other difficulties but if you've changed t-belts before, lining up the timing marks and at TDC and etc. should be a walk in the park for you. There are quite a few seals and gaskets you do have to replace so make sure you buy them. If you need a list, I can get it for you as I'm nearing my t-belt change at 95k miles.

yes, it is an interference engine. You do want the timing belt to break or you'll have more problems.

not sure of your handicap but if you take a look in the Accord FAQ, you'll find a write-up I did on how to replace a timing belt and water pump on a 94-97 Accord EX (F22B1). It's almost the exact same steps just might have slightly different alignment marks. You can take a look through there and see if you feel it will be too difficult for you to tackle or not. I say the hardest part is breaking that crank pulley bolt loose, once thats loose it's down-hill from there IMO.

OK Thanks.
I think I have decided to just bite the bullet and take it to the Honda dealer(where we bought it) and let them do it all. Price seems a bit steep, but it just can't wait any longer.... and I simply don't have the time or ambition to do it.
I'm not even gonna tell you how many miles are on it. It would scare the bejeesus out of you.

haha, good call. It's best to not wait and take it in if you don't feel it's something you can do or want to do.
