Re: East Coast is the Right Coast - Let's try this again...
So my car needs a new motor due to spinning a bearing last year and spring is just around the corner so I am itching to get things rolling.
Tossed up between another JDM ITR motor (expensive, reliable, no dyno needed) or experiment and build a B20vtec motor
(more affordable, all new parts and necessary precautions taken, dyno tuned etc.) while still being a couple thousand less in the end.
Looking to hear some opinions or experiences with b20vtec. I know most will probably say just go ITR or a different engine...

Do a JDM gsr and put in some ITR cams and an aftermarket ITR style intake manifold if you want an oem longblock. Youll come out a bit less and be within a few hp of a JDM R motor
Id still go with a b20 vtec if youre looking to make some power. Its not hard to build one that will walk all over a 1.8

Or you can get an LS block for cheap and turbo it and walk all over an R block.

Priced out for the JDM ITR with all parts and personal needs is well over $4000 for me
B20vtec swap priced out is around $2700~ for me. This includes new jdm b20b from local engine depot, dyno, install, and a plethora of new parts. I have a GSR head already that is tapped including the sandwich plate and all. Thought about using my ITR head from the blown motor since it has Toda valvetrain, Toda cam gears and new ITR cams. Weary on tapping it and separating it from its matching block though. I've been trying to sell it but at the point where I might just hang onto it for parts or a possible full rebuild in the distant future.
My budget is $3000 to make things clear. I will not put an engine in my car without replacing everything necessary, e.g. timing belt, water pump, gaskets, you name it lol

Id just stick with a JDM GSR then. Throw an ITR style intake manifold on and whenever you have extra funds do the cams. The most fun I ever had with a car that was NA was a JDM GSR with Toda B's in a 92 CX.
The only thing worth the extra $ on a 98 spec R swap is the header and the transmission which can be bought separate of course.

I'm sure I could find one but it'd be beat to **** and high mileage was offered a JDM b16b from a friend with 20k miles on it for a decent price but not a fan of b16s especially after owning a b18cr. Being picky and having a budget/timeline is my downfall at the moment

Yeah b16b is cool but it's still 1.6 liters of no tq

Not really. I've had b16, us b18c, h22, f20, k24.
This built b17 is plenty strong and sticks with stock JDM ITR motors.

So a B17 is plenty strong? I guess so strong that Honda only made that engine for a few years it was so strong.

I don't see what to argue about? Stock is obviously questionable but Brice explained it is built
