New tires soon...
#1
Any thoughts on which tires I should get? Any experiences?
I've narrowed it down to several good ones. I'm basing my choice on tirerack.com tests, surveys, and reviews. But this forum knows its sh*t so please weigh in.
Price and dry traction are most important to me, but wet traction is also very important. Road noise and driving comfort are also important.
The best one I've found, imho, is General Altimax HP: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....del=Altimax+HP
second best: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....FS+P01+(H%26V)
third best ($50 rebate): http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ta+LX+Platinum
fourth best ($50 rebate): http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....rt+A%2FS+H%26V
Thoughts? What's your tire and what do you recommend? btw I'm looking for 185/60/14.
I can't wait to get these babies on my crx, put on new struts, and new brakes. It's gonna be a dream!
I also really want to keep getting good gas mileage. I'm getting about 42 average right now. I'm wondering if this will go down noticeably if I switch to wider tires. Or if it will go up if I get narrower tires. What's your experience?

Re: New tires soon...
The General and the Kumho will be more durable than the Sumi and BFG, but the Sumi and BFG would handle a little better if you drive "enthusiastically"
I'd probably go with the Generals......
Fuel economy will drop off a little (regardless of which tire you choose) due to the new tire's full tread depth, but that should taper off as you get the tires worn in.

Re: New tires soon...
OP, I looked at your General Altimax HP 185/60-14 tires. They have an O.D. of 22.7". I also looked at those in a 195/60-14, they have a O.D. of 23.2" which translates to about 65 to 70 RPM less at highway speeds. I don't know if your current wheels are wide enough to support that tire, but if they are you may get slightly better fuel economy because of them.
Just to let you know, in an other thread I asked a similar question & ended up buying the General Altimax HP 195/60-15 (H) tires. They are also a slightly bigger O.D. tire at 24.2", compared to my stock size of 23.5". That will yield about 100 less RPM at highway speeds for me, a slight fuel savings. I haven't mounted mine yet, I hope they work as well as advertized.
Good luck.

Re: New tires soon...
I drive fast on sharp turns with enthusiasm! Why do you think the general will handle better than the sumi? The tests on your site tirerack.com show the generals performing better in wet and dry traction, plus noise and ride comfort. Are the test ratings important only alongside the 3 other tires in the same test?
Looking at the tests, the generals seem like the clear choice, but for me traction is far more important than comfort! Thanks for your help.
Good to know this. I am definitely going to consider going with the 195's. If they fit on my wheels, I'll go with them. I read that slightly wider tires does not hurt fuel mileage very much. after all, 185 to 195 is only 5% increase in width. Good luck with yours, too. Please post your experience here!

Re: New tires soon...
I know those are awesome, but they're a little expensive for me. I just realized that tirerack.com's tests and data are not useful because you can't cross-compare between tests. A guy on the phone at tirerack.com said conditions vary and such. Even the cars used to test the tires are sometimes different. The tests may not be legitimate at all...I'm now under the impression that the tests are a load of BS. I asked him if he could recommend any other sources to find out which tires are best, and he said he could recommend "none whatsoever."
