Default Is The CV Axle C-Clip Really Necessary?

The C-Clip on the axle shaft, especially on the passenger side where it goes into the differential. Are these things really necessary? I just went through a bitch of a stuck axle on the passenger side, and its not the first time. It would be so great if I could just slide it out when I break an axle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, almost 50 people have looked at this and no one has an opinion? I am very surprised.

I think it would be just fine without the C-Clips. There would never be enough room for it to fall out or anything, I don't think.

Anyway, I hope someone has some input. I googled it too and couldn't really find any info on it.

It is required, don't try running without one or you may damage your axle or differential.

The axle wont stay in without it. You might get about half a mile or so before it does but that's about it.

agree. Thats what keeps the axle attached to your transmission.

Thanks for the input. I realize this is sort of a stupid question, so here is some background on it. I had a Wavetrac LSD in the transmission and that’s what it was stuck in. I did some research and found out it was actually a manufacturers defect. On the first few runs of the B-Series Wavetrac differentials there was a defect that would not allow the C-Clip to come out. I actually damaged the differential removing the axle and the C-Clip broke in several places. Wavetrac has agreed to replace it for free since it was a manufacturer defect.

OBX had the same problem, although I don't believe they've ever helped anyone out ever.

Yeah there is suppose to be an angle cut on the splines where the c-clip expands. So when you try to pop the axle out it will compress the ring instead of jamming it.
