Default Alternator internal short?

Is it possible for an alternator to have an internal short? Why am I asking, well heres what happened.. While driving, all of the gauges on the cluster stopped working, and radio goes on/off. After that everything just shuts off. Car died in the middle of the road (it aint not fun!) and luckily I happen to have a jump pack in my trunk. I jumped the car and drove it home with my hood opened. When I got home, I hooked up the volt meter to see where the voltage of my battery was at. I got 12v and it started draining fast with the car in the on position. When I removed the alternator plug or fuse 15 (forgot to mention that this fuss didnt blow), the voltage would climb back up slowly. So my question is that possible?
Car is a 96 civic ex sedan.

I know its not charging, what i want to know is why the battery is draining with the 4p connector hooked up to the alternator and car is on (it will not start unless I jump it).
