Steering wheel shakes 80 mph
car is 01 teg. when i am going at 80 mph, my steering wheel begins shake and car does not feel stable when switching lanes, seems like my car is "floating"
i had my alignment toe set to 0 at all corners when i lowered my car. my car does not pull left or right. someone told me, my rear toe should NOT be set to 0, which is why it is feeling the way it is. is this true? car felt stable BEFORE i did suspension.
i seriously doubt it could be a tire balancing issue? at 70, there is no wheel shake, at 75 it begins to show little shaking and at 80, its quite noticeable.
does anyone know whats going on here?

Re: Steering wheel shakes 80 mph
Could be multiply issues for your steering wheel shake at 80mph. You will just need to make a check-list and check all the suspension components one by one.
-Wheel out of balance.
-Bent wheel.
-Worn bushings.
-Wheel bearings.
-Steering Rack
etc.......

Re: Steering wheel shakes 80 mph
No but really, the OP's car doesn't have radius rods. It has front lower A-arms, which in effect combines the front LCA's and radius rods of earlier Civics and Integras.
OP - first thing I have to ask is: does the car shake at all when the throttle is closed at 80mph? If so, it could be wheel balance or any of the other things mentioned in this thread. If not, then most likely it is the inner CV joints that are bad.

Re: Steering wheel shakes 80 mph
I am in the market for a 2002-2004 used 3 series convertible and I test drove a 2002 today with 14k miles on it. This is the first 3 series convertible I have driven. When I got up to 75-80 mph (with the top up), the car kinda shook and shimmied so much so that the rear view mirror was moving quite a bit. I have a 99 328 4 door sedan that does not shake like this and I was wondering if the convertible is not stiff enough and that is why it was shaking or this car just had tire balance or alignment issues. If you have driven your convertible at this speed (and you know you have) and NOT had shaking problems, please let me know so I can be confident that a different 3 series convertible is still the right car to buy.

It's because his car has TOO MUCH TORQUE of course LOL

i hear it is a wheel balancing issue, so hopefully it is something as simple as that.

This is caused from your REAR Toe angle being out of spec. I had my car at 0 toe for a while and it did the same thing.
Put it back to spec and it will handle and grip like it used to...except without the sloppy soft old suspension.

Rear toe angle should be set to 0.1 inch (2-3mm) INwards (not toe out).
Good luck, guaranteed that will fix the problem. If you would really like better freeway speed handling though, consult your local shop with the idea of a traction bar to alter your caster (castor) angle to a higher positive value.
Stock caster is about +1, and by adding another +1,2,3 to that, the straight line stability will greatly increase at higher speeds

Your rear wheels are out of alignment spec....they will NOT wear more if that toe-in angle is added. That is the Honda spec, and should be followed for your situation.
Im telling you from experience. I had floating at around 50+ mph in my car because of that rear toe angle and once I fixed it, my car drove perfectly again.
Traction bars are there so you can adjust your castor angle. I purchased ETD Racing's traction bar also with a motor mount to keep everything where it should be.
The whole point of changing your suspension is what? To make the car handle better...fix your toe angle and your car will do so. No reason to be cheap and get into an accident because of it. The shop should fix it for free unless you otherwise specified that you wanted "zero" rear toe like I previously did.
Good luck, please listen for your safety. The information ive given you is scattered throughout this site and is not false.
