Clunking noise in rear
EK Sedan dropped on Teins, oem shocks. Making noise ("clunk") in rear when I hit a sharp bump at anything over a snails pace. Local tuner shops are too proud to help me since I'm not investing in full coilovers so I went to brake check and got in on the lift. All lower bushings look good so they think it's the shock mounts. Car rides pretty good considering and the front is fine.
The car is my daily so I'm not looking to dump a crap load into suspension.
Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Re: Clunking noise in rear
no rear sway bar correct?
jack the car up so the tire is a bit off the ground, then put a prybar between the tire and the floor and use it to apply force to the bottom of the wheel while watching all the bushings. if any are bad you'll be able to see the play.
but if i had to bet money, i'd lean on something more simple like the exhaust hitting the lower control arm.

^^no sway bar, did the pry bar thing and bushings are ok. Exhaust does bump but that's not the sound I'm hearing.
thanks for the feedback.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
"clunking" noise from the suspension is often an indicator of a blown shock. It's hard to get the same noise when inspecting the car. are there any signs of fluid around the shock seals?

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Two shocks were blown, so i put four new kyb's on and it's still making the same noise. Now he (mechanic) wants to put isolators in cuz he thinks the contact from spring to cup is what's making the noise.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
I'm having the same weird clunking noise also after I installed skunk2 springs, I'm gona install energy suspension coil spring isolators also hopefully it solves the clunking problem, if it doesn't then it could be rear trailing arm bushings?

You should be able to see cracks in the bushings if they are bad. I just changed 2 RTA bushings and both were cracked top and bottom all the way thru. I made a tool for removing them instead of buying the $140 one on line. I reccomend buying or making one. if they arent wedged in with rust they might come out with a good smack from a 4lb sledge hammer.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Most lowering springs are designed to re-use any OEM isolator pads. if the factory spring has any rubber, you should move it over to the new springs.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
If I have unusual wear on the rear tires along with a clunking noise, what does it mean the problem could be?
I have wear on the inside of the tire.. like cupping. As if they are toe-in.
thanks

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Old thread but I guess in case someone finds it through a search here goes.
I've experienced clunking with lowering springs, namely progressive springs. I discovered it was the coils in the softer portion of the spring contacting each other.
The solution was to install some spring isolators in the coils that contact one another. Tein sells them.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
I already added insulators like that.. and changed the rear swaybar links, replaced shocked with 3 different kinds, changed the top hats, installed 2 different types of springs, (oem and eibach), I replaced the oem upper control are with an adjustable one and now back on oem arm, I checked all the lower control arm Bolts and nuts, and still getting good clunking... I have execessive wear on the inside of the tire using all OEM control arms.. and it still chunks. I've been looking for the clunk for at least a year. I even bought a steelmaker wireless ear, and it has not helped me to find it yet.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Sorry, can't help you much. I assume you have the car aligned correctly and that you followed the bolt tightening procedure indicated in the workshop manual?

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Yes sir. It's all OEM arms. I never noticed bad wear on tires until recently but I never had the control arms off the car, so I never had to follow an instillation procedure. For tightening the arms. I just made sure they were tight and nothing loose.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Check the manual, it recommends tightening the suspension with it loaded, so the bushings won't bind. It might not solve it, but It won't hurt. I didn't understand the sentence "TheRev is no alignment on the rear" but I'd recommend an alignment. Inner surface wear usually means excessive toe out.

Re: Clunking noise in rear
Alignment won't make clunking noise. But I will have to get it looked at because of tire wear. I had it set a long time ago, so not sure why it needs to be reset. But that is not the source of clunking...
