Not that I need 3 tons, but it was the smallest one Sears had in stock. Oh well I'll just have to drive up on a 2x4 to clear it.

If you got it from Sears, return it-you got a legitimate reason. Than measure the clearance and find the right jack.

You can use the stock jack to lift it high enough to get the floor jack under....

Well it won't get under any of the four corner jack points inside of each wheel well, but it's great for lifting up the entire front or back end... which is the only way I'll lift it from now on.

Drive it on some wooden tire pads 12 inches square, made up from two layers of 3/4 inch by plywood.

Driving up on blocks is fine....as long as you don't get a flat. I used to take the saddle off my Sears jack. It has a flat pad underneath. That was the only way I could get it to fit. I now have a Powerbuilt 3 1/2 ton jack. It is about a 1" lower than the Sears jack (around 4 1/2"). It only cost $10 more. It is a 'long frame' type so you can push it deeper under the car/truck to get to frame members. Not really a issue for our cars (Acura/Honda) but it helps for the tow vehicles.

Yep my Sears jack I have to use a 1" thick board. I actually made two ramps by take a 4' plank cut it in half to get two 2' planks. Then take off about 10" off both planks and glue them on the remaining plank which should be 14".
