Painting My 97 Civic Coupe Help
Ok so i have a 97 civic coupe
its milano red, BUT i have many parts on the car from converting it to a 2000
i have a whole front end
-two headlights
-two fenders
-grill
-bumper
-hood
that is ALL SILVER
so next i have a electron blue pearl wing
i have a white, rear bumper
and a lot of different colors on my car
i want to paint my car a different color which is close to the si electron blue pearl, and so in order to do that, i no i have to sand the whole car and every other piece needed to be painted in addition for the car (ex. front lip)
so what is the best way to sand the whole car?
i was told to use 320 grit on the whole car, is that even for the plastic pieces as well? everything?

Re: Painting My 97 Civic Coupe Help
this is going to be tools, no spray can.
what my plan is , is to get it all sanded and prepped the best i can before i hand it to the shop to get it painted.
but ive heard theyre prep work isnt great, so i would want to do it myself (:

How to you know your filler is level?
your just going to give it to them and hope you dont see the filler spots threw the paint?
There going to throw primer over your work, block it out,fix imperfections, prime, block ect ect.
Sounds like no matter what there going to be doing 90% of the work. for a decent paint job. maybe you should just let them do what they do best.

just sand down the whole car, find all the high and low spots in the metal, use filler as needed. block all the flat panels down, do a light guide coat, block sand it lightly to reveal the low spots, fill it in, repeat. go over the whole car 3 times..

Re: Painting My 97 Civic Coupe Help
scuffing plastic pieces with green pad is what is recomended by the paint products i use (akzo nobel) . be fairly gentle if you do choose to go with green pad. i have left scratch marks in plastic pieces with moderate pressure. then be sure to wipe plastic clean with a wax and grease remover that is anti static. then of course following with plastic primer, akzo nobel even makes that primer in aerosol!.

You can wet sand anything on ur car for paint. If ur not to experienced with bondo and doing body work I wouldn't recommend u trying to fix dents and having the shop just primer and paint.. there is a big chance you'll get wavy panels and still see were u did the body work.
I've been painting for a while and was taught at a shop and even now I'm not to good at body work but I practice on my hatchy old fenders and hood etc...
Sounds like ur a hands on guys maybe you should buy a spray gun and practice on ur old panels and see if you can get ur cars body work and primer done before u go to the shop so u can block and fix Ny imperfections before they prep for paint.
Also the shop preps cars all day every day and me as a painter I wouldn't paint a car that isn't preped by my guys correctly.
If your not to sure about the quality of that shop look at a few around ur area and check there work and talk to the painters
Good luck
