Default Spun bearing??

Okay, I have never spun a bearing before nor have I heard an engine with a bad bearing.
The other day my engine started making this knocking sound (not fuel related)
It would start at about 2k RPM's then sort of go away closer to 4k.

I had to drive the car a little ways to get off the main roads. Then I had it towed home. How loud would the knock be if it was a spun bearing? Also sounds like it might be coming from the head (bad valve?) But would a bearing make no noise at idle and go away at higher RPM's?

Give us some background info on what led up to this noise.

I hope it isn't too bad.

well car has 232,000 miles on it...

Nothing really happened prior to the noise. I was just driving home from work in traffic when I noticed the sound...

Oh. Hmmm, with that many miles, it could be anything. BUt, based on your description, it sounds like a spun bearing.

Maybe now is the time to do the H22 swap??? If you need a replacement H23, let me know. I still have my old H23.

I know when my H23 spun a bearing it was a knocking that you really couldnt hear and then when to bring rpm to about 3k it would knock like a SOB and it sounded like it came more from the timing belt side.

The only thing you can do really to check is drop the pan and see if there are any metal or if the rods have play.

I hear you. Money was tight for me too. However, I knew that I wanted to keep the car for many more years, and replacing the engine was the only thing that made sense since I would've needed to take out the H23 to replace all the parts I wanted to. Replacing the timing belt and water pump while the H23 was in my car would've costed a lot as it is.

I would recommend doing the H22 swap, atleast the H22 longblock. It's a nice way to redo all the belts, hoses, seals, etc. all at once before the motor goes into the car. Since you have high miles, it's not a bad idea at all. Not only that, it might be a good time to change your axles and clutch at the same time.

I gave my car a new life after the swap. I practically changed ALL of the wear items. I have no regrets.

Good luck.

Next question...
I have not had time yet to take my oil pan off to check this out but... if it is a bad bearing. Is there a chance that I would be able to just replace the bearing? Or does it always cause further damage?
I have never dealt with bearings before.

Depends how long you will drive like that. First there is a chance you can replace only bearing but with time your crank is getting worse until it's a junk. If it is scored a little it can be polished.

Well I did not drive it much once it made the noise. It's not very loud now. Only present from about 2k-3k RPM's. I had it towed very shortly after it started making the noise. I could not hear the noise when there was no jersey barriers next to the car.
So maybe I could just replace the bearing? without having to machine the crank???

If it is a spun bearing and $$$ is the issue then you should really consider the F23/H23 Hybrid.

I know where you can get a low mileage F23 shortblock that will be really cheap depending on shipping. I was going to buy it but If you want it I will buy it and ship it to you. Block will be about $50-75 and it is really an easy swap if you don't do the sort of crap I did to mine.

The only thing is that it will lower your compression to 9:1 but it is cheaper than rebuilding the block if it is salvagable and you can run 86 octane all day long.

Hope you figure it out.
