Need to run a OBD1 H22 with a OBD2 ECU
For like a day. Here is my problem, I recently bought a 97 Integra RS with a H22a swap. Car runs like a champ and doesn't throw any codes. In NY though we have to have an annual safety inspection sticker on our cars. A new component of that inspection this year is an emissions test. Not a real emissions test though with a sniffer, they just use an OBD2 scanner on 96+ cars to see if there are any codes for emissions components.
Sooooo, when they go to hook up to my ECU(p13), they won't be able to connect and I will fail the inspection.
Is it possible to run a H22a4 ECU and not throw any codes? I only need it to work for like an hour.
Thanks guys.

The OBD2 ecu will throw codes unless you have all the OBD2 emissions equipment.
You will also have to deal with the OBD2 ecu's immobilizer, not an easy task.

What is the immobilizer?
What would happen if I plugged in the OBD2 ecu right when I got to the shop? If they only started the car to get it in the shop would it be enough to register the codes?

It won't start. The immobilizer keeps the car from starting unless you have the exact key meant for the ecu and the whole transponder unit that sends the signal from the steering column to the ecu.

What can I do then? Change the engine over to OBD2?
What would happen if I plugged in a 97 GSR ECU?

Well, your main problem is that OBD2 has to complete a certain cycle.. Its a engine diagnostic cycle of several miles and just taking it to the shop wouldnt work. Im not sure, but I wanna say its min. 200 miles.. Probably alot more... Second, u dont have the right OBD2 equiptment and will throw codes as mentioned above... Lastly.. that immobolizer is not an issue if you can find a 96 ob2 ECU... 96 only! But theres still that conversion issue you have...

I have to do something, anything. Is it feasible to convert it to OBD2? Other than the second O2 sensor what are some of the differances in H22's?

Re: Need to run a OBD1 H22 with a OBD2 ECU (crxhybrid85)
either the cyl sensor or the top dead sensor is on the oil pump area on the obd2. I think if you use the obd2 ecu you need this oil pump/sensor.
Id say find a 96 lude ecu. try the gsr ecu and see what codes it throws. I wouldnt drive it hard with that ecu.
Id say plug it in right before the test. I think you will need an o2 sim for the o2 sensor that will probably be your first code.
If you can get ahold of the gsr ecu try it out an see what happens?
your in new york and you cant find a place to pay off?

Re: Need to run a OBD1 H22 with a OBD2 ECU (kulrevon)
Well I'm thinking that if I can get a GSR ECU off of a working car that doesn't have any codes, I might be able to plug it in right before the inspection. It wont be in diagnostic mode and might not register the codes right away.
****, if you disconnect the ECU it erases the codes so that wont work....
I have no problem installing a OBD2 oilpump, distributor etc. but how in the hell am I going to find a 96 VTEC ECU?!

Re: Need to run a OBD1 H22 with a OBD2 ECU (crxhybrid85)
Well I did some research and it looks like a GSR ECU will actually make some power over a stock p13, with the expense of some low end. I haven't made up my mind what ecu to use yet.
I am going to convert to OBD2 though. The 96+ oil pumps do have the TDC sensor in them so I will have to get one. I would assume that I could just incorporate those wires into my existing harness?
Are there any other sensors I will be missing in converting to OBD2?

Re: (bad-monkey)
I am looking for a place that will do it, but it's like, how do you ask someone something like that?
If I can't get anyone to do it, I will have to go to OBD2. It's the only way.

Re: (crxhybrid85)
dont forget that you also need a cat and a second o2 sensor or an o2 simulator.
I was saying the 96 prelude ecu is the only obd2 p13 or p14 that doesnt have the immobilizer.
but try the gsr ecu and see what codes will come up.

Re: (crxhybrid85)
You don't have to worry about swapping oil pumps or any of that nonsense. Whether you have an OBD2 or OBD1 engine, the CKP and TDC sensors appear the same to the ecu. It doesn't matter if they are in the distributor or mounted on the oil pump. Preludes don't have crankshaft fluctuation sensors so you don't have to worry about that. OBD2 Integra/Civic ecus do. You won't be able to use an OBD2 Integra/Civic ecu without throwing the crank fluct sensor code. NO Preludes have it.
Here's the OBD2 specific stuff you have to worry about with Prelude ecu's:
2nd O2 sensor
Evap bypass solenoid
Evap control canister
Evap purge flow switch (97 only, not sure about 96)
Fuel tank pressure sensor

How can you tell if you get a OBD2 P13, what will the sticker say on the ECU.

It'll have OBD2 plugs and the sticker will say 37820-P13-A12
