Default lude problems: loud ticking and hissing

92 si with a jdm h22 running temporary h23 p14 ecu with injectors that i'm not sure of yet. (can't tell if h22 or h23 ones). runs very well like this so i assume h23 injectors.

anyway, the first problem is something related to the clutch....when in gear, there is no sound, as soon as i put it out of gear i hear a hissing. almost sounds like something is rotating. i assume some kind of bearing is bad. any ideas?

secondly, i have a VERY loud ticking sound from the engine. i hear it in any gear, but i have to give it a good amount of gas or else i can't hear it...to hear it best, if i put it in 5th at a low rpm (1500-2000) and then floor it, the ticking gets louder then my exhaust..which is damn loud. the tick speeds up a tiny bit as i climb through the revs. and the ticking gets louder the more gas i give to the engine. this leads me to believe that it's the injectors ticking, but i've never heard of them being THAT loud. any ideas here?

it sounds like the throwout bearing has gone bad for one, and it sounds like the injectors could possibly be making the ticking

that loud...and the sound isn't very fast...like only one injector is doing it. is this bad for the car?

cracked exhaust manifolds can make a ticking. This hissing could be anything from and throwout bearing to the input shaft bearing.

Hissing isn't the TOB. If it was there would be no reason it would not make the noise when it is in gear. I bet it is your input shaft bearing as someone stated.

Usually TOB's will squeak and it will go away when you clutch in but won't matter what gear you are in. Sometimes it makes a noise only when you clutch in...

Yes, but they can be hard to hear when you are moving if the bearing is not very bad.

I don't think using the p14 is a safe thing to do
for one, wouldn't your car run lean in vtec?
does vtec even engage w/the p14?

I agree it's most likely not the TOB. The sound they usually make when starting to fail is described as more of an aweful sound than a hissing. I've heard injectors ticking to the point I couldn't beleive it was an injector making the noise. But as stated before, exhaust leaks can also sound like this.

well, i notice that rpms fall a little slowly when i shift...is that related to the hissing at all?

and i'm running the p14 until i can figure out why my engine runs like garbage with the p13...i have no vtec and i shift at 3000 and only go any higher rpm when i'm on the highway so i think it's fairly safe..

.i'd back up the timing a bit but i'm having trouble reading my timing...i have a non adjustable timing light and i lined up the + sign in between the 2 little, barely visible, white marks. and between the little notch built into the engine. this right?

also, how would i check for exhaust leaks?

i just set the timing way back and all it does is run like garbage over 3000 rpms...still ticks...i checked the plugs and they are actually kinda black so i don't think i'm running lean.
