Default How Do You Use Sealant on Tail lights

I just replaced my tail lights with after market ones and so they don't fit as good. I was told to use a sealant in order to prevent water leakage, but I don't know how to do it. Do I remove my tail lights and then put the sealant on? How much should I put? Is Permatex a good brand to use? Any tips would be appreciated.

I would just put a clear sealent caulk around the sides, sand it smooth if necessary.

I'm about 30 min away from Boston. So do I put the caulk on before I put the tail lights on or after? It came with this rubber insulator strip, and I was wondering if this acts as a effective sealant? It's raining hard today and I opened up my trunk and there wasn't any water leaking into it. Thanks.

Uuuuummm....before. Just put the caulk around anywhere you think it may leak.
Wait for it to dry then sand it down smooth.

You caulk the part where the lense of the taillight and the taillight housing cometogether. Not the taillight to the car.

Oh Ok. I don't know much about cars- as I'm sure you can tell! Do I put it on all sides of the tail lights? How long should I wait before installing them? Thanks so much.

the idea is to completely seal the tail light to the car, so put it all around the sealling edges and put the tail back on while the sealant is still liquidy.. just don't let it dry before you put it on,

so what direction are you from boston,

What are you trying to prevent from leaking here? Water getting into your trunk or water getting into your taillight? I was talking about the taillight, and I think Prelittelude is talking about the trunk.

I am talking about water getting into the tail light itself.... So I put it all around the tailight, wait for it to dry-sand it, and then install it, rite? Oh and prelittlelude I live right around the same area as you.
