How many miles is TOO many?
I'm looking to get a 1999 Honda F4, and it looks like its matainence records are fairly complete, but the bike has nearly 40000 miles on it, some of those miles on the track. The bike is being sold for about $3000.
Should i be very wary of this deal? Does it make a difference that it is a carb'd engine versus fuel injected? Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

if all the maintenace was kept up, 40k isnt that much for a bike. but for 3k u can find one with alot less mileage. i just got an 02 f4i with 4k miles that was laid down for $1200
fuel injected is easier maintenance.

Have you checked the bike out you never know what hidden probles may be present for a bike that was laid down that would be a reason for a real low price. If I had to decide b/t your bike and the one youradhere is considering I would take the one that hasn't been laid down

Im typically on this site for car tech, not motorcycle tech, so when it comes to bikes i am near clueless.
That said, while an 02 f4i for $1200 does sounds unbelieveably tempting... i wouldnt know where to start as far as getting it back to rideable shape.
To be completely honest, this is going to be my first bike, and i know it is only a matter of time before it goes down for some reason or another, so my big concern is that the ONLY misstep i would take is laying down the bike. Ive got enough to worry about in terms of riding alone without having to worry about the engine dying on me

for myself, when you begin to approach 20k you should be well out of a bike even though they will run fine for another 10-20k. I actually try and get out well before 15k

I've got over 50K on two different hondas (99 f4 and 87 vfr). The vfr's electrics were poop (like all of them), but it still started every time. The f4 still takes me to work whenever I want. No problems here.

Re: How many miles is TOO many? (bad-monkey)
If you maintain the bike well they'll last as long as car engines do. I know plenty of people bushing 60k-70k on their bikes and they still run like a dream. After 20k miles though the resale value is going to go down dramatically because too many buyers are misinformed and think that 10k on a sportbike is incredibly high mileage.
$3k for that f4 is too much though unless its in great condition.

I could not disagree more... if you are talking about simply running you may have a loose argument, if you want to discuss reality the MC engine looses its efficiency more rapidly as it is more highly tuned. In addition a motorcycle is suffers from exposure more so than a car does, try and not compare the two except in the loosest terms

Re: How many miles is TOO many? (MSchu)
Any highly tuned engine is going to require more regular maintenance to keep at its peak performance but as for needing any major work to keep it running, no it's going to. Motorcycle engines will outlast the bike before its crashed/stolen.

guy on speedzilla commutes on mountains roads in CA to work 100 miles 1 way on his rc51. He hit 100k and first problem was a swingarm crack. And yes he runs it hard. But the bike is also a tank

Re: How many miles is TOO many? (EngineNoO9)
Well for what it's worth, I just turned 99,000 yesterday on my '04 F4i.... still running like new! Never had any problems with it, just regular maintenance and it just keeps going and going and going, lol. Take care of a bike and it WILL last!
That being said, I'd buy a high mileage bike that's been taken care of over a low mileage bike that's been neglected any day of the week. 40k ain't that bad... check it out and if all the service records look good and the bike is in good shape, hell I'd buy it. Might work on the price a lil bit though

In light of all this, i am definitely going to try to talk down the price, based again on just how detailed the service records go
If i do decide to hold off on purchasing this bike, do prices go dramatically lower after riding season? I bet bikes are harder to come by in the winter though, right?
