i'm not too handy when it comes to bikes, so i guess i fit in the noob category... gotta start sometime right? well so is the regulator /rectifier equivalent to a alternator on a car? how should i test it?

your suppose to charge the battery when it's new? ah man maybe that's the problem?? well it started and ran for a few days then went dead.. i'm ready to just off it cuz it's been sitting for about a month.. now when i try to jump it it doesn't even start...

Yes. You killed it already. Get another one, and a 1 amp charger. It will take ~5 hrs to charge the new battery.

NOOOOOOOO! Please don't buy a new battery! I see new bikes with new batteries come back to the dealer all the time, and it's because the dealer didn't charge the bat with the top cracked/off. You need to unseal the lid prior to charging especially for the first time. Try this before doing anything else. I don't have time to explain the physics of batt. charging, just give it a shot.

You dont need to open up the battery to charge it - I never have, and I dont think i'd recommend it - there's acid in there. There is a vent tube on the battery for a reason.

I had the same problems with my battery not holding a charge so i went out and bought a new battery and put it right in and everything has been ok since. New batteries should be charged right out of the box and ready to go.

Wrong... the batteries aren't shipped to the dealers charged... it is their responsibility. And yes, cracking the cap open (how else would you add water if necessary) for the first charge is recommended.

Check the instructions for the battery - many say DO NOT add water.
Again, you dont need to take the caps off to charge it. Thats what the vent is for.
