Default 2004 Element ABS 81-1

2004 ABS code 81-1
The problem: When I start up in the morning, the break light and ABS light stay on. The parking break is off. I drive to the gym, about 4 miles. When I get back in the Element and start it up, the ABS light goes off and the parking break light goes off when the break is disengaged. I can drive for the rest of the day with no ABS light on. The problem has been going on like this for some time with the same patters. Occasionally the ABS light won't come on at all but usually does. But always goes off the next time I start up after driving awhile.

I was told at the shop where I've been take the Element that the code, 81-1 means the ABS control unit needs to be replaced. Cost for the unit $1,460.00! All fuses have been checked. It has a new battery I put in about six months ago. I was told that when the ABS light comes on it usually comes on after the break light. But it was unusual for them to come on together and stay on. The service manager was puzzled that the ABS light just didn't come on and stay on. But the computer code only gives the option of replacement. No other codes for things to fix come up.

I want some more information before replacing the unit. Thanks!

It is possible the abs sensors in the wheel bearings are out, because that is what happened when mine did.

I have not seen that DLC before though...

That is not a very common code. At least where I work it isn't.
There is really only two reasons for that code to come on. A, possibly and hopefully a bad connection at the ABS modulator control unit. B, there is an internal circuit failure inside the modulator control unit itself.
Worst case scenerio, you're going to need a new ABS modulator control unit.

Thanks for the info. It is not a common code. The service writer said he only remembers having replaced one of these. I'm just trying to find out the problem. The fact that the ABS light goes off the next time I start the Element after driving a few miles and doesn't come back on until I start the car after it sits all night is strange. I wonder is it just not working when the light is one, but the rest of the time with the light is off the ABS is working?

Again, thanks for the input.

did they check pin fit? if that connector has been off before and installed incorrectly on a SMJ type connector like the abs modulater there is a chance there are some ill fitting pins i say this because i have seen it a handful of times as of late. check that other than pin fit its the modulator but i have seen pin fit more than the modulator if that helps you at all.

The modulator itself is on the passenger side of the engine compartment (under hood).
It has an orange clip/handle holding it. Make sure it's seated properly and clipped-snapped into place.
Try wiggling it around without undoing it and see if any lights will come on.
