you "unbolted it from the steering wheel"?

did you unbolt the U joint from the BOTTOM of the steering column? or just the steering wheel???

thats all you need to do, other than pop off the tie rod ends. you can leave the inner tie rods on and get the rack out by a series of movements.

this is a U-joint Universal joint).

there are one or two ujoints at the BOTTOM of the steering column, near the pedals. you take off the plastic cover. there is a 10mm bolt you must take out that is locking the pinion shaft of the steering rack.

did you take that 10mm bolt out?

and if you did, the steering rack will drop.

not sure what else to tell you. there should be nothing but a bit of friction on the pinion shaft left holding it up.
