Default Oil Pan Drain Plug Stripped! What now????

I just bought a 90 Civic sedan with the 1.5 stocker in it and when I went to change the oil I found that the last person that changed it must have cross threaded the bolt. I bought a new bolt hoping that was all it was. NOT! The threads in the pan are stripped, too. Does anyone know of a bolt that is made for such situations that is sold or any way to fix it without having to go thru the hassle of replacing the pan? Combustion Contraption said there is a kit available at the dealer called sure seal. Anybody know of anything else maybe? Thanks for any suggestions!

you can buy oversized drain plugs that tap out new threads. the good ones will have a magnet to get all the shavings so they don't recirculate into the engine again. the other solution is to buy a new oil pan.

Yeah I heard about the oversized bolt route. Do you just buy one and force fit it in or do they make 'em just for that purpose? Dude I don't even want to have to go thru the hassle of an oil pan change unless I absolutely have to. If it wasn't for that damn exhaust lead off pipe being in the way it wouldn't be so bad but it can be a real pain getting all of that out of the way.

I appreciate the offer man. I'd send you some cash to cover it. Not sure if any place around here will have ever heard of such a thing. Is it threaded for a Honda drain pan?

no it doesn't use threads it is just rubber and expands a lot to cover the hole. i was gonna use it on my 91 crx hf but i did an engine swap so i never got to use it. if you want it i just have to look for it it's in my room somewhere

A new oil pan would cost you like 10 bucks and isn't hard at all to change.

Where can you find a new oil pan for $10? I looked on eBay and the cheapest one is like $50+ shipped and from on-line parts houses they're like $60 plus shipping. Retail on one is like over $75 from the dealer. I agree they're not hard to replace, it's that damn exhaust lead-off pipe and dropping the exhaust that's the pain.

I meant a used one. Plenty of people here have old used ones for sale. Hell I have one if u want it. You can have it for free if you pay for shipping.

Ah ha! I wondered there for a minute. If I can't find something that'll work, I may take you up on the used one if it'll fit a 90 1.5 stocker. Thanks a million for the offer dude!

It came off of a D15B1 1.5 stocker, so yes, it will bolt right up. The only thing is that you may want to get a new oil pan gasket.

Let me check to see if I actually still have it before you get excited, hold on...

If you do and it needs a gasket, I can get one of those fairly cheap. They're not too much.

Yeah, I stil got it tucked away... glad I held onto it.

Yeah, it needs a gasket, but like you said, they're cheap. If you want it let me know... If you PM me your shipping info I'll give you a price for shipping tomorrow.

When I'm in a bind, I look inside the hole and see how threads are left. If there's more than three, I'll go to parts and ask for the longer drain plugs.. They're off of a 99 Civic.. It's usually long enough to catch the remaining good threads in the pan. You can also get those plugs from Acura..

I actualy did that. The threads are cooked all the way. CarQuest Auto Parts sells a tapered oversize bolt made just for this type of situation. They are $2.64 each. THANK GOD!
