Default Brake Shims? Do you need them?

Do you need the metal plates "shims?" on your brake pads, and what is the purpose of them?

They help to keep the pads from squeeking, you dont NEED them, but they're nice to have.

I don't have them on any of my pads and they don't squeek. As long as the backs of the pads were greased so you should be ok.

Do not use grease on your brake pad if you value your life!

The material used on the back of brake pads is an anti-squeal compound devised to dampen vibrations which results in squealing. Brake pad shims are composed of a different density metal from brake pad backing plates helping to reduce vibrations which results in squealing. They are not mandatory but they will reduce squealing on a street car.

I never use them since I own cars and never had a brake problem related to.

Never put grease or anti-seize on pads or wathever.Grease collect dust....

If your brake squeals, something wrong or change brand of pads or you got Hawk Hp+(and that's ok!)
