brake lights always on. problem fixed.
my brake lights (tailights and 3rd brake light, not gauge cluster) were left on today. i came back to my car and the lights apparently drained my battery, but the hint of the brake lights was still there even though i couldnt start the engine.
but i remembered other ppl had this problem. and so i knew the solution and what to look for. sure enough, i found little bits of blue rubber on the floor mat. its pieces of the brake pedal sensor bump stop basically. and it crumbled and feell apart. and without it, the sensor thinks the brakes are always depressed.
feel up the brake pedal (not too far up at the hinge, below the hinge) and youll see the brake pedal sensor. theres a hole, thats where the bumper used to be.
so i replaced it with a bolt to get me going. but the bolt turned out to be too big, my pedal was dragging the brakes. way too much vibration at highway speed. so i let it drop out. made it back home alright. me and my friends have a spare chassis i took a replacement from, and its all good now.
here's some of whats left that broke apart.
just sharing. itll happen to you if it already hasnt happened. and youll know what to look for.
i forgot to mention that i had to get a jumpstart first because when the engine is off, the brake booster only allows you to push the pedal two or three times before the booster chamber is completely pressurized. with the engine running, i could then push the pedal down to get access to the brake pedal sensor area. glad i also carry around a small set of jumper cables.
hey, i found a pic of what im talking about. its not exactly the same, because this is a picture of the CLUTCH pedal stopper, but its basically the same as the BRAKE pedal stopper. except when the clutch one falls out, you cant start the car (unless you have an 88, which doesnt have a clutch pedal sensor).

Yup - recently went through it with my '91 CRX DX. Brake pedal did it about six months ago. Yesterday it was the one on the CLUTCH pedal - only when that one goes out, the car won't start! I think I've got it figured out now; at least I'm able to hotwire it and will be able to get it home tonight so I can work on it at my leisure. The dealership shows the same little plastic stopper for the brake and clutch pedals; set me back all of $2.29...
Hopefully this is all that's wrong with it, and it should be back in fine shape soon.

I work at an acura dealer and the part number for this piece is 46505-SA5-000.
The part number does cross over to honda so im willing to bet this is the part number that you guys need.

dirty_dan: Yup, that's the Honda part number as well.
I just put the stopper on my clutch pedal, and all is well. Car starts like it should.
