What Manual Transmission fluid for 95 civic ex?
Hey everyone, just got my first honda a 1995 civic ex 5 speed with a d16z6 and i am planning on changing the manual transmission fluid within the next few days. The owner's manual says to change the manual transmission fluid with 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil but i am wondering if i can use the honda genuine manual transmission fluid in the green and silver bottle without having any problems? I searched quite a bit and couldn't find a clear answer whether or not it would be okay. Any help would be much appreciated.

I always use 10w40 in all my Hondas whit out problems.
My friend use GM synchromesh in his Type R and drag EG.
Other shops friends use Honda MTF, GM synchromesh or 10w40 with the same result, apart for the price.

So would regular 10w40 pennzoil yellow bottle or castrol gtx be okay in temperatures that are usually mid 60s degrees and does not go above 80 or drop below 30 degrees? Also how is Honda MTF pointless? The reason i ask is because i have a hard time getting into reverse and sometimes downshifting into 2nd and ive heard that honda mtf has helped some people with this problem.

I always use Honda MTF. Ya it's more expensive but it's what the manual recommends and you only need 2 quarts for a full fill.... It's not like we're filling a 700R4 with 12 quarts of fluid. Haha

Honda MTF will kill input shaft bearings in those transmissions, it's far, far thinner than the original MTF, it's basically the consistency of water. Plain old 10W30 works great in a '92 - '95 D-series trans. Torco MTF is great stuff as well but not really necessary for what you're doing. If you're having shifting issues fluid isn't going to fix it. That said when shifting to reverse shift into a forward gear first and it will usually go in easier, or shift into reverse when the vehicle is just barely rolling.

To expound on that a little further Honda MTF kills the input shaft bearings in '96 - '00 transmissions too (same bearings), but they just don't seem to shift right with 10W30 despite being almost identical transmissions, the only real difference being the shift forks and how the detent ***** are setup.

Okay so basically using honda mtf will mess up my input shaft bearings, but the newer 10w30 motor oils dont have the right zinc and other minerals that used to be in motor oils back in 1992-1995? Is there any alternatives to these two that will be okay to use and can be found for under $10 dollars a quart? Ive heard ppl mention pennzoil syncromesh, gm syncromeshm, and torco mtf. Any information will be much appreciated.

Take a look at Valvoline Vr-1 10w30 or AMSOIL.

That said despite what some people say I've had no issues running current non-synthetic 10W30 and I have rebuilt a bunch of these things, the other guys that have rebuilt tons of them say the same thing. The only guys I see complaining about the lack of zinc are the guys that have never rebuilt one of these transmissions.

Torco MTF works especially well, and it really isn't all that expensive. I think my price locally is around $11/L (this is with a small discount, I think it might be something like $13/L retail)

Re: What Manual Transmission fluid for 95 civic ex?
ive used 10w30 synthetic in my 98 ex trans with no problems I just notice it seems to wear out fast and shifting starts going to shyt after about 20-40k miles. I put in Honda mtf this time so far 20k it still shifts like butter unlike the 10w-30...

wrong. The manual states use 10w30 motor oil or 10w40 motor oil if you are planning on doing a lot of highway driving
