Default Just bought used 93 LX, Some minor issues.

Like the title says, I just bought a 1993 LX sedan.

I think I got a fairly good deal on it... $1500, 169K miles on it, Runs decently well... Looks like someone backed into something and then pulled foreward into something, so there's dents in the front and rear bumpers and hood and trunk lid... I got it last minute as I just blew the head gasket in my wagon. (See signature)

Anywhozer, I've got some minor issues that I want to deal with.

1.) Transmission whines softly - It was reccomended that I up the oil from 10w30 to 15w40 or 20w50. Should I put synthetic in? Any reccomended brands/types?

2.) In any other car, when I want to shift into reverse, I put the clutch down, and simply shift into reverse. In this car, it grinds if I shift into reverse. I have to either wait a few secconds or shift into first, then reverse. Why is this? Can it be fixed?

3.) The clutch doesn't quite engage where I like it. As I remember from my glance under the hood, it's hydraulic. (My last Civic was cable.) I haven't looked under the dash yet, but is the pushrod adjustable? There is more free play than I prefer.

4.) I haven't pulled any spark plugs yet, nor have I replaced any filters... As I said, I just got the car... It seems as though it's a little sluggish until about 3-4K rpm... Then it kicks in... Perhaps I can adjust the TPS or something? A full tuneup is in order, after I change the seeping valve cover gasket. (Fuel and air filters, Spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, oil change, pcv valve.) The valves are ticking lightly, perhaps this has something to do with it.

5.) It's going to be 10 years old this January. As I recall from other cars with air bags, they need to be checked by the dealer every so often. What intervals are in your user's manuals? I have no manual. Is the check free? The SRS light is not on.

The engine is a 1.6 Liter, 16 Valve, SOHC, Non-Vtec... That's B16, I think... I'm new to the Honda engine code thing, so please bear with me.

um i have a 94, yeah its pretty slow until 3k . that is pretty normal from what i hear. the reverse thing is pretty common from what i hear minus the grinding, it just wont go into R sometimes. Occasionally i have to do the first forward then reverse deal. the engine is d15 something or other. its a pile and i dont think that you can do anything worth while to the engine. if you find out though let me know.

Yes the pushrod under the dash is adjustable. And um you got a d16, not a b16. D series are sohc while b series are dohc.

Hmmm... It seems slower than my stepbrother's 1995 EX coupe... Although it could be because it's an EX coupe. Vtec and all... Oh yeah.. and I looked at Kelly Blue Book, it lists the only engine available as a 1.5 Liter. I just assumed all Civics after the late 80's came with 1.6's... I never thought about looking at the emissions sticker...

It just seems a little slower than my 1985 Wagon... Perhaps it's geared differently? I need to shift around 4-5K RPM to get any sort of "normal" acceleration... Also, when I'm going for a turn, it seems as though 2nd gear is too high, but 1st is too low of a gear to select, so I either rev it high in 1st or chug it in 2nd...

Anda big Doh! on my part.. I shoulda remembered this post I made a long time ago...

92-95 Civic LX is a four door automatic only, I don't think you have a LX. Do you have power windows and locks???
the 92-95 DX and LX are 1.5 non-VTEC, and are slow, really slow, like 17.3 in the 1/4 mile slow.
I used to own a blue 93' Civic LX, and really loved that car. At times I wish I had kept it and swapped in a b18c with manual tranny, and had a sleeper 4-door. I think the 5th generation 4 door civics look hella better than the 6th generation 4 door. You have a pretty cool car though, I am just partial to 93' 4 door civics though, ahhh the memories . Build up the suspension, and then do a swap, do what I wish I had done at times, I miss my 93' .
But, then again, now I have my 00' Si
