Default How do you find out the maximum tire width your rim can handle?

One of my front tires got a nail in it, and can't be repaired. So I'm about to make some tire-buying decisions...

I have 5Zigen 17x7 rims, and right now I have Kumho Ecstas, in the size of 205/40ZR17.

I did some research, and I do know what each of these numbers mean. My question is...

How do you find out how wide a tire your rim can handle? For 17'' rims, the smallest width Yokohama Advans come in is 235/40ZR17.

How do I know if my rim can handle the 235 tread width?

Thanks. Probably a noob question, but I've never had to think about this before.

235 will not fit on a 7" wide rim

this is from Toyo and they say 8-9.5" wide rim for that size.

235/40ZR17** 8.0-9.5 rim

205 mm wide = 8.07" wide.
235 mm wide = 9.25" wide.

205s will fit, 235s will not.

Hmm...well from that info, it seems like even a 205 shouldn't fit on my 7" wide rim.

I have some clashing opinions here...

205 and 215 will fit on the 7" wide rim.

2000EM1 is showing the actual size of the 205 tire, its made to be slighlt wider then the rim to protect the rim. 205mm = 8.07" althoug that is useless when picking a tire.

7" wide rim will fit 205 or 215 tires and thats it in 40 series sidewall. widest is 225/45/17 that will fit 7" wide rim according to Toyo

see for yourself, column on the far right is rim sizes and what they recommend

Ok cool thanks.

I'm gonna go spend some time on the Toyo site...sounds like there is some good info on there.

just keep in mind, while 225 may be the widest that will fit the rim. It has to be close to the overall diametre of stock.

for example, 195/55/15 was stock on my car at 23.5" overall diametre , so 205/50/15 is ok at 23.1" overall diametre.

and also, what is the widest you can fit without rubbing, 215 will rub on a lowered civic, prelude may be different, you'll have to find out

My civic is slammed in the front, so I'll definitely make sure I take that into consideration.

Whether or not a tire will fit for a rim is a specification of the manufacturer. Tires are spec'ed with a minimum and a maximum rim width. They can be different with each tire.

However 235s one a slammed civic sound like they will rub. not to sure though.

Also there is a "Wheel and Tire" forum. There are a few people on there that are very smart and helpful. Try posing there.

Cheers!

My old summer tires were 205/40/17 and I definitely wouldn't recommend anything bigger than that on an EG (not sure if that's what you have). They would rub a bit if I turned all the way to either lock, but it was negligible. This was with a 1.75" drop on H&R sport springs btw.
