Friend created a cheap exhaust.....really nice sound.
My Civic needed an exhaust badly... holes in the pipe, rust in the muffler etc. Dont have the money yet for a good exhaust but had to do something. The ratatatatat.... brattattat sound is really annoying.
Friend works for Mieneke and offered to help out for a few bucks. I guess a rice sounding civic is better than holes in pipe.
He cuts the pipe from the cat back, and installs 2 1/4 pipe up to a Flowmaster muffler. Then he puts a 3inch (yes 3 inch) resonator in the middle (where the original resonator resided) with a spiral pattern inside.
I doubted that it will sound nice but I had no choice.
Anyway, when we started the car, it had a deep hum at idle... I say niiiicee!. He revs the engine to about 3-5K and the hum just gets deeper.... I liked it!. Above 5K rpm, the exhaust is loud enough to be annoying the neighbors but still deep and hum like sounding.
Its like a HHHMMMMMMvvrrrrrmmm sound. No ratatat or tin sounding exhaust.
Not a high pitch bee sounding rice that I was expecting. I'm impressed!!
So to anyone who would like the same sound the ingredients are.
1. Flowmaster muffler ( the ones with the chambers)
2. 3 inch resonator with a sprial pattern inside.
3. 2 1/4 piping all the way from cat back.
I dont know if there are any power gains ( I doubt it) but it defenitely has a better flow than a stock exhaust ( u guys know how tiny those pipes are). I meam 2 1/2 is a lot bigger than 1 1/4 pipe. Plus did I mention the sound is awesome??

A friend of mine did this to his 94 Teg . Its a cheap way go and to get a different sounding exhaust . I drove the car myself but didn't notice any power gains , also his came out sounding like a Weedwacker drinking NOS . But if it sounds good and looks clean screw it , it works.

The resonator looks like a cherry bomb but the inlet and outlet is a a 3 inch pipe. So the middle portion of the resonator is slightly bigger. I'm mentioning this because it might cause some clearance problems. The stock resonator in its biggest diameter is only 2 1/4- 2 1/2 inch.
They have tons of it at Meineke.
The spiral pattern I am refering to is the inside of the resonator. Its like fins that is shaped like DNA strands. The fins twist in a spiral formation if you look through the resonator.
Reason he used a big resonator is he did not want to restrict the flow because the spiral pattern takes up space inside. The smallest diameter inside the resonator is about 2 1/2 inch so in theory, it does not restrict the flow as much.
I think the muffler removes the crackling sound from the exhaust, but the resonator makes the sound smooth. Resonator also removes that bumble bee sound at High rpm.
Hope this helps out.

A little over a hundred bucks plus Glow plugs for his RC. Not much considering the amount of work he did.
Realistically, be ready to spend around 200 bucks for parts and labor.

Sounds like a really good deal is there anyway that you can post some pics of the system itself? I am in the market for an exhaust and I dont want to pay 500 bucks for something thats going to make my car sound like a bumbble bee

Flowmasters sound ok, but they are pretty heavy.
A dynomax superturbo is a lot lighter and sounds about the same. Either one will work ok though.

I would post some pics if I can.
I dont have a scanner though. My PC only has enough technology to get me in the web.... He-He.
But to get an idea what the muffler looks like, you guys can look it up in the web. Its rectangular and has some 'deflectors' inside.
The resonator looks like a big cherry bomb.
The pipe is not mandrel bent.... but hey, I did not pay $500 bucks and I'm satisfied.....at least for now.
