Default 3rd Gear GRIND

Real quick...

Whenever I've accelerating hard, shifting fast, whatever; when I shift from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd gear almost ALWAYS makes a grinding noise as it goes into gear. If I'm driving slow, normal, whatever, it doesn't grind at all. I seriously don't think that its my technique, cause its not doing that in any other gear. I even try just holding the clutch in longer frm 2nd to 3rd than any of the other gears, and it still does it. Its like it only grinds when the motor is in a high rpm.

is it the gear? linkage? "driver?"

Anyone had this problem? (its a d16y8)

GM syncromesh fluid.

If you didn't have a bad syncro I would only recommend Honda MTF.

This happens! My old tranny did that too! Either replace the synchro's, or add syncrho fluid, or just take it easy on the 2-3 shifts.

second, to do this....wheres the drain plug? Never been able to find it just peering down into the motor...

thanks in advance btw

You need to drain all the fluid.
Uses 2.3 liters.
GM Syncromesh fluid, try google. Or search here.

I have the same problem with my ex coupe...changed the entire tranny, but it was due for it anyway. Still grinds going into third, friend said it might be shift linkage but I will try this synchro idea. Thanks.

yes and yes, drain plug is on the bottom. Take a socket wrench (umm 1\2 inch drive) and stick it into the plug.

i'd also recommend changing your tranny fluid, and you can double clutch 3rd to have no grind, hehe. takes it easier on the 3rd gear synchro

wrong it takes a 3/8" driver. here:

my tranny grinds like a bitch everytime i shift to 3rd above 4000, and 2nd above 5000 (it only has 60k) .

try some of that gm syncromesh, and start double clutching to third - its real easy: just kick the clutch, take out of second, kick it again, pop it into third and give it some gas - all in one smooth quick motion. thats what i do all the time now and no there's grinding

okay what about this, i have a 93 civic si and when i shift from first to secind really fast(have a short shifter) it grinds a little could itbe because my tranny doesn't have enough time to slow down and i might need a lightenflywheel or should i also used the synchrofluid stuff, my car only has 65k miles on it

there is a thing called a driver you put on the ratchet - don't believe me? look in your helms manual: it says "using a 3/8 DRIVER...." and they have a picture of it in the special tools page for that chapter. but, a 3/8" ratchet end will do the same.

i have somewhat of the same problem. i tryed changing the MTF. didn't help. i just have to take it easy. it seems to have more of a tendency to grind when its cold. its weird. and the more you take it easy the less you'll notice. the more freqent you grind the more you'll notice it in lower rpms
