Default 00 DX Auto Reverse issues

I have a 2000 DX Hatch that is having some reverse issues.

Today, I went to leave the house, and when selecting Reverse w/ the gear selector, the car would not go into reverse.

Checked the Trans fluid, and level looked to be fine. So, hop back in the car and select Reverse, I feel it go into gear, and she backs up.

I go to get some food, driving down the road, and the trans shifts fine. I mash on the accelerator, and the trans drops like it should, shifts like it should. I get to my destination and park, making sure to park where I will be able to leave by going forward. Everything went fine.

I go to leave the eating place, Car leaves just fine....drives home fine. I get home and go to back the car into the driveway (because I tried Rvrse @ the restaurant parking lot & it worked fine), and she won't back up to go into my driveway. It FEELS like it doesn't go into gear sometimes when selecting R.

I drive to a level parking lot and do some investigating.

Car drives fine in forward gears
On level ground, when gear selector is on R, the car will roll fwd when the brakes are released.

This is a trans that I put in the car that was advertised as having 40k miles, but the A$$hole sold it to me with no solenoids (ebay). When I called him, he told me that the auction was for "just the transmission, no accessories". Got it for $240, shipped. I guess I can't complain too much. So, I had transfer over all but one solenoid (the plug broke) from the old (worn the Hell out) trans--had to buy a new solenoid from Honda.

Any more suggestions of things to look at?

Any help on diagnosing this? Thanks in Advance. Is there a chance this is another solenoid issue?

Well, I have had a CEL forever (for the secondary O2 sensor), and have yet to do anything about it.

So, am not sure if there is another code.

However, I'm not getting a D4 code (it's not flashing or anything).

Jump the service connector and check for codes.

All technical problems are strange.

Ron, does this sound like an external (ecu, solenoid, etc) or internal (in the transmission) problem to you?

It's hard to say. My recommendation is that you check (1) the cable adjustment and (2) for CEL codes, and then (3) do three drain-refill cycles. Then go from there.

RonJ, is it a trouble code if the D4 indicator is illuminated when I turn the ign to the ON position? I just noticed that, today. The D4 indicator hasn't been flashing when driving (like I've had happen, before)

I came across an inexpensive trans from a kid doing an auto-manual swap. Figured I'd pick it up for the solenoids (figured I'd have the trans if it came to that), I pulled the one on the bottom of the trans, and let the fluid drain. It was a medium brown, not red. Another thing I hadn't mentioned is that about a year ago, I put a radiator from Advance on the car. I was driving the car to my Dad's house (2 hr drive) and the trans starting acting weird when I slowed down--wouldn't shift properly. Got it to his house, pulled the rad cap and noticed the "strawberry milkshake" stuff in my rad. I was like "Oh God...". Jacked up the car and when I pulled the drain plug, COOLANT rushed out of the trans. I spent the next day flushing the trans with fresh fluid until it came out clean (ran through about 2 gal). The fluid in the trans is from that flushing/change.

So, being that the fluid is this color in less than a yr (less than 10k mi), do you think the trans is toast?

ok so the the transfluid has coolent in it yea that can ruin the trans id also chang the radiator cause what u discribed is a bad radiator since u changed it u should know that there are lines leaing from the trans to the rad if the rad is bad near the transcooler portion then there is trans fluid going into the rad and coolant going to the trans id atleast change the radiator and flush the trans with a ton of fluid till it turns red let it all drain out then fill it to the proper level same with the rad u could get 1 from the junkyard if u do that get 1 that is holding fluid so u know there are no holes.

If there is a transmission code thrown, it can be retrieved by jumping the service connector and watching the CEL and/or D4 light blink.

However, it would be pretty safe to assume that your transmission is toast. Swap in the other one you have - but tell us the car it came from.
