I have an 06 Civic Si. i took it to the service department and i need front/rear brake service, which includes new brake pads and machining of the rotors. i can do the brake pads on my own, so my question is are the machining of the rotors an absolute necessity? or can i just change the pads and carry on with the rotors? the front rotors are 9.0mm and rear is 8.8mm
(the lease expires in august so i might not keep it on the count of the economy being so terrible)
any advise would be welcome and thanked.

if you dont resurface the rotors, it can lead to premature wear on your brake pads,
and when you brake at certain speeds your car will shake since the rotors aren't flat.

If you've got another car to drive once you've got the brakes all off, you can have somewhere like Advance Auto machine the rotors. I would do it for sure, and it's only 15 or 20 bucks to have them done if I remember right.

you can also warp the rotors makeing them useless and dangerous. take it to a shop to have them resurfaced.

if u dont want to pay all the labor then take off the rotors urself at home while it on jackstands and have a shop just machine the rotors for u

If you do any hard braking or want the new brake pads to seat in to the rotor good I suggest having the rotors resurfaced and after the brakes are all put back on the car make sure you seat them right you should get nice braking and don't have to worry about squeal from the rotors being glazed or have the small groove in the non-resurfaced rotors to eat the new pads at a high rate of wear.

i personally say have them resurfaced for safety, even if your giving it up when the lease is up ... just be a nice guy

always take off the rotors when doing a brake job other wise you'll be sitting there with a sledge wishing you didn't have to abuse your car like that.....

if you don't have another car and need to do the work fast, buy another OEM set of rotors and replace the ones you have now.

You can then on your leisure take it to napa or another machine shop and have them turned so they're ready for you next brake job.

or even better, sell them to one of your friends as "remanufactured units" just make sure he aint that good of a friend lol
