Hard brake pedal, no stopping power.

I am no expert on brakes, but it sounds like you might have air in your brake lines. I had a similiar problem with my Toyota. Never changed the pads or anything, but all of the sudden, I had to pump up the pedal after start-up. Once they were pumped up they worked fine. My mechanic said he had to bleed to system and replaced the fluid. Then they worked great.

That would make it a soft pedal, i have the same prob with my gf's 95 coupe. The OP has a HARD pedal.
