SRS repair questions. [I need help]
I am repairing an 03 Civic USA built, 2 door with side airbags. The car had front end damage when I bought it, and both front airbags were deployed. I replaced the 2 bags, the belts and the main control unit with used parts. The light was still on so I took the car to the dealer. They scanned and said the OPDS in the right front seat was bad. They replaced that and the light stayed on. They scanned again and said the main control module was bad. Shouldn't the control module problem showed up in the first scan?
I have heard that a used control module may not always solve the problem.....
Can anyone help?

Mate, you might want to give it a little while. It's very early morning and this particular forum doesn't move very fast anyway.

when my airbags went off the dealer told me that they couldnt reuse my control module that it HAD to be replaced. so maybe they cant be moved from one car to anther either.

remember this is a public forum. none of us are getting paid to be nice people.
if im not mistaken, as long as the module your using hasnt been in a accident, it should work.

Ok It HAS been replaced. But with a second hand, identical module from a vehicle with undeployed bags. Should that work?

It should work if the part was the same #. There is one for side air and one for no side air. What is the part number? After the opds unit is replaced the srs system needs to be initialized. Sometimes this is overlooked or can fail and a manual initialization process has to be done. try and get the codes so we can help further.

Re: SRS repair questions. [I need help] (fiveten)
Thanks fiveten. The part number of my old module, and the supposedly "good" used unit we replaced it with is 77960-S5P-A121-M1. [Do you know where I can buy one?] Sorry I don't have the codes but possibly I can get them.
In my first posting I asked why the faulty module didn't show up in the first scan. I talked to Honda dealer yesterday who said it wouldn't show until after they fixed the OPDS. Does this sound right?
Today is the day I start chasing the salvage yard for a refund on the module. I hope they believe me. But of course I have an invoice from Honda dealer proving it.

Re: SRS repair questions. [I need help] (Daleford)
At this point I am unable to get the codes. The mechanic DID try to initialize the system. In answer to my first question in this post....... They say the dead module would not show up on a scan until any other faulty components were replaced. In this case it was an OPDS.
As far as returning the faulty module to the salvage yard, they have a no warranty policy on electronic parts. However, they have hinted they may try to find another. They say they had tested this one and it was good. My dealer says the only way to test a module is on the car.
Next question: How would a salvage yard test a module?? I know they had to go to a second salvage yard to obtain it, so they didn't have a car to test it on. Could they have taken it to a Honda dealer to bench test ?. THANKS

I would also say check all your wired connections, if one is messed up with will throw the whole system off. Did you by any chance reset the cars computer after the install of the OPDS? I know the system has to be reset before the light goes away.

Yes, I checked with mechanic, system was reset.
My luck has changed on this for the time being. The salvage yard has agreed to send another unit. They say they have a scrapped Civic with the proper part number that has undeployed air bags. I need to return mine first. I wish I could get the next one bench tested.........................

you forgot to replace the obvious, when the airbags go off, so do the seat belt tensioners, the seat belt tensioners job is to keep you in the seat when the airbags go off, you need to replace both the seatbelt tensioners on the B-pillar which is were the seatbelt comes out of as well as the seat belt tensioner on the seats where the seatbelt goes into, they are a one time use.
Thats what happened when i got my RSX seats they were out of a wrecked RSX, hooked them up, SRS light came on, reset it, still was on, replaced both belt buckle assemblies, and the light was gone.

Re: (Em2 Yo)
Thanks but............ re-read my first post. I did mentioned I changed the "belts".
As per your description, arn't the tensioners located only in the buckle on the seat?
Does the part of the belt in the 'B' pillar have anything to do with the SRS?

Re: (Daleford)
There are 4 seat belt tensioners.....There is the actual buckle that is located next to the center console. (one for each seat) And there are 2 seat belt retractors one for each seat. Mounted in the b-pillar behind the b-pillar garnish. If there are any failures in the system then the srs and opds unit will not initialize. If all of your components are not 100% functioning and your local dealer does not know then they will false diagnose srs components as failing because the system has faults. You can not do an accurate diagnosis when the system can not properly communicate with all of it's components.

Re: (fiveten)
OK, so that explains why the first scan didn't show the main module as bad. The OPDS had to be replaced to complete the system. The Honda mechanic is now saying all that is bad is the main module
I have been told horror stories by a Honda guy on the E-Baymotors forum. He says possibly there is something else wrong with my SRS system that the scanner is not showing. He says if they hook up an undeployed "good" module, the system my fry that module. When the good module arrives, I will be scared to go to the dealer! As I said, the dealer's tech man is saying that the only thing showing wrong with my system now is the main module. Can I trust that info?

Re: (Daleford)
Further to my last post....... Honda dealer SRS scanner says the only thing showing wrong with my system is the SRS module itself. I have a "good" used one comming from an undeployed SRS car that has the same part number exactly.
My question is: is it safe to take car and this module to the dealer for installation and reset?
[again, I have been told horror stories about dealer scanners not showing additional problem and blowing the module. I also have been told used "good" modules don't always work in another car]
I thank anyone for info on this.
