2001 Civic LX Rough Idle/Vibration Problem
A friend of mine picked up a 2001 coupe, and is having some idling problems- we presume
The car is idling around 500-700rpm, the engine temp is perfect, everything in it works, it drives fine and has system. It was in a front end accident but only the radiate was replaced, wasn't a bad accident. It only vibrates when it is at a stop, either in park or when the brake is applied. No idea when the last tune up was, the tranny fluid is decent, will need a change shortly but is alright. Oil will be changed tomorrow and spark plugs too.
Any ideas on this quick fix?

Re: 2001 Civic LX Rough Idle/Vibration Problem
Probable causes for "engine idle vibration" with an automatic transmission.
- Low ATF
- Shift solenoid valve A defective
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A defective
- Drive plate defective or transmission misassembled
- Engine output low, low idle speed
- Torque converter clutch piston defective
- ATF pump worn or binding
- Lock-up shift valve defective
- Misadjusted engine mounts

The usual..
- Check (or replace, if necessary) the ATF.
- Clean the IACV
- Change the air filter, spark plugs, etc. (as necessary)
Make sure you're checking the idle speed when the car is in Park (or neutral) with everything else turned off. (headlights, heater, radio, radiator fan, a/c, etc.)
It should be around 700 RPM (+/- 50)
How many miles are on the car?

Re: 2001 Civic LX Rough Idle/Vibration Problem
Currently there are around 72700 miles on it. It was in a front end accident so the motor mounts are actually my best guess.
I checked the ATF. It's good but not great. Will need to be changed around 75k.
I do need to do an oil change as well as my spark plugs.
Recently found out while trying to get an alignment done that the right outer tie rod end is bent. I need to replace that and get it all aligned.
It currently idles around 700 with a system on and AC going at times. It just vibrates real bad when in park or the brakes applied.
How do I go about cleaning the IACV?
Thanks for the reply.

Re: 2001 Civic LX Rough Idle/Vibration Problem
Okay, quick update.
I work nights so I go in from 1030 pm to 7 am. It was a cold/stormy night last night, fog on windows/windshield etc. When I started up my car it idled at 1500 rpms with no vibrations and slowly made its way down to 1k rpm over a good amount of time. It wasn't until I put it into drive when the vibrations started to occur again and even if I would switch it back into park/neutral the vibrations would continue. I did notice though that it only seems to vibrate if in drive or reverse after starting. Not sure if that has something to do with the cold start up or what. I am not 100% sure about this either but when I was at a stop light I was sitting there, it was vibrating, so I decided to push the brake in a little harder to see if anything would occur, it actually seemed to vibrate even harder after doing so.
I am perplexed.
I need one of you guys to come to my house and teach me some ****. hahaha.

Ok. I'm a 95% sure it's one or more of your motor mounts. Check the rubber seals for any ruptures. If I understand correctly, this car has been in a front collision right? check your motor mounts, or have them checked, if this is the case have them replaced, if not, have them adjusted if needed.
I have the same problem. I'm just waiting for a couple more paychecks to buy a new motor mount kit.

Re: 2001 Civic LX Rough Idle/Vibration Problem
I have a 2001 Honda Civic four door lx and I'm having idling problems as well as vibrations. The car has a 5 speed manual transmission, I just put new plugs in it, and Lucas treatment, and I'm going to do an oil change hopefully today or tomorrow. The car does have 331, 005 on the body and around 150, 000 on the engine..
Do you have any idea what the problem is?
