Steering Wheel Shaking
1997 Honda Accord 2DR
My steering wheel shakes very fast and rapidly at high speeds when I brake. Since I noticed the shaking I have:
-Replaced brakes with new pads and rotors
-Purchased brand new tires
I am a little stumped as to what it could be. It is important to note that i do not feel ANY pulsation through the brake pedal when braking; only through the steering wheel.
Any suggestions?

Hmmm, normally when you get wheel shake its as a result of rotors or needing to speed balance the wheels... in this case im not too sure
Do you know the condition of the steering tie-rods?

Re: Steering Wheel Shaking
Sounds like an alignment problem. If I was you I would go get a 4 wheel alignment done. Usually cost between 50-80 dollars. Depending on where you live. Or just a front wheel which cost 25-40.

Check your tie-rods.. if they need to change then do that and follow the following instuctions:
Get the 4 wheel alignment, speed balancing
If they do not need to change, just do as above..

Re: Steering Wheel Shaking
bad rotors, inner/outer tie rods, or maybe broken balancer belt (but maybe not since you said only when you brake), bad tires, or tires need to be balanced. try those.

check the nuts that keep your wheels/tires on. They might not have been put back on properly. My gf's car did the same thing, and i went out and check her tires and somebody had stolen 3 of the 4 nuts off of her left front wheel.

Re: Steering Wheel Shaking
if there is no shake at hwy speed normal driving,, than it is not a wheel balance issue
if it only shakes when you are braking, frt rotors or rear ( rotors--drums ) could be warped ( drums -out of round ),, yes,, i know you replaced them but if you used a cheap brand they could have been warped from the factory,,Also it is not an alignment issue DO NOT waste your money doing an alignment
also chk the frt suspension components for anything loose or worn,,
did you replace rotors yourself??made sure everything is back in place properly?? all the bolts tight ??

Upgrade the brake pads to a more performance type pad. Hawk performance pads are usually good for the price. I had oem pads on my accord and it did the same thing one i upgraded the pads problem solved.

i agree with deserthonda. Check front end parts, and also rotors like he said if you did them yourself, just be sure you put everything on right even check the caliper bolts and everything, hope you figure it out gl.

go out to the car. put both hands on the top of the tire and try jerking it towards you. if it moves around or your hear any clunking, try replacing that. or have some one take a look at it. upper control arm was $80 at autozone but it fixed my problem.

Re: Steering Wheel Shaking
that doesnt make any sense. you might have tightened a loose bolt while you were putting in new pads. it just doesnt add up that oem pads have these symptoms.

Re: Steering Wheel Shaking
I had the same problem with Honda wheel shake at high speed braking and acceleration. The honda dealership had no answer to correct the problem, after replacing brakes, rotors, all other parts where in good condtion. The problem started at about 12,000 miles new tires seem to help for some time but the problem always came back. I had one person tell me they thought it was a bad rear motor mount. Instead of replacing it, I replaced it with a Ford and now I have no wheel shake problems.
