removign valve cover
okay i want to remove my valve cover so i can change the gasket and possibly put in a new cam seal... 1. where exactly is the cam seal is it on the timing belt side or the side where the dizzy is? 2. can i get to the seal by just taking the valve cover off?
3. okay what kinda tool do i need for this job i used a regular 3/8" drive ratchet with a socket and the bolt wouldn't turn for ****...
4. do i have to torque everything down if so to what lbs?
5. the balance shaft seal i want to change also.. do i just take the timing belt cover off and slide in a new one?
thanks guys..

Re: (ScruffyTheJanitor)
yeah it's easier said than done. Get a nice manual and check it out. Some of those things you shouldnt even worry about changing until you change your timing belt etc.
Why are you magically inspired to do these things? The valve cover gasket I can understand since many cars have a leaky gasket there eventually.

yeah, the valve cover is the easiest part of the job. Just use the ratchet and screw it off. It couldn't be any simpler. Maybe the gaskets are stuck together so make sure you tap the cover a little to.
Also maybe give us a little info about what car you have?

Take the 4 nuts off the valve cover, take out the spark plugs, un bolt the ground wire,
hit the valve cover on the front and back and it should come loose, if not, stick a flat head between the cover and head and pry slightly, not hard or else youll mess up the mating surface

Why remove the spark plugs? Valve cover nuts can fit right thru the plug holes and fall into the cylinder.

Re: removign valve cover (soon2bdropped)
If you have a SOHC engine, there is no cam seal. The timing belt seals it on one side, and the dizzy seals it on the other. if you have a DOHC then the cam seal goes on the intake came, on the dizzy side. You only need a cam seal if there is nothing on the end of the cam to seal out oil.
I just took some pics for ya
Tools required: 10mm socket, ratchet, extension(optional I suppose) Pliers and a flat screwdriver.
Step 1: Remove ground strap
Step 2: remove plug wires w/ plastic separator's and move aside
Step 3: Pull out pcv valve
Step 4: remove clamp, and pull out breather tube
Step 5: remove valve cover bolts(4) Note, that the washers will stay in there unless you pop them out.
Step 6: pull valve cover out.
ETA: when you install a new gasket, put a dab of silicone on the head, on either side of the cam arches(by the dizzy and by the cam gear) As far as torque goes, snug up the bolts, then give them a quarter turn, you don't want to tighten them too much, or you will squish the gasket out of shape.
