Default My Honda is shaking/shuddering at 2000 rpm :(

Hi - I have a 1995 Honda Accord EX with a 4 cylinder V tech engine. Recently I've noticed that its starting to shudder/shake from 1500-2500 rpms. It also seems to need a little more throttle off the line to get going. It doesn't matter what gear the car is in, the engine just needs to be turning over at around 2000 rpms and with a little bit of throttle - just enough to keep at a cruising speed. If I coast, it is not really noticeable. Also if I continue to accelerate through the rpms it goes away. The shuddering is enough that the whole car is doing it - high frequency shuddering that you can feel all through the car.

The car has 124k miles on it with regular oil changes. The timing belt has been done at the recommended service interval (forget when it was due, but it was done when needed).

Thanks for any help or pointers. I was going to start with a cap, rotor, plugs, and fuel filter - basically a tune up since it is due for that and hasn't had it done in some time.

Kind of sounds like a typical EGR clogged ports, except maybe one or two, disconnect the EGR vacuum hose and plug it and see if the problem goes away.

what he said.... clogged EGR is #1 cause of this. YOu gotta remove the fuel rail to get to it though.

Definitely sounds like the EGR ports are clogged up, especially if the car only does this while moving. IIRC, the EGR doesn't operate unless the car is moving, i.e. you can't be sitting still and rev the car and duplicate this problem.

Probably the EGR...
Oddly enough... I did NOT have this problem UNTIL I cleaned out the ports Exact same symptom...

My ports were completely blocked by solid carbon and it didnt do this. I think after I claned everything, residual carbon in or before the EGR blew into the freshly cleaned ports and clogged a couple or restricted the flow... so I guess I need to open it up again and re-clean them.
good luck, sohc

edit: this could also be timing, and a tune up like you had said couldn't hurt.

You guys rock!! Plugged the EGR valve and walla!! shuddering goes away. So here are the next questions....

1. Do I need to replace the EGR valve or do I just need to clean it? Any tips on cleaning it - just need to spray it with brake cleaner? Any other advice in this area is appreciated.

2. I got a fuel filter as part of the tune up - any tips on getting the old one out - I was able to get a flare wrench on the bottom nut but couldn't get it to budge. I would be worried I wouldn't be able to get it tight enough once I got the new one back on.

Thanks!!

Howard

EGR is easy to clean. basically what you do is scrape all the residue out of the ports and free them up. be sure not to get anything in the port and leave it, if you do blow it out with compressed air.

as for the fuel filter its a b to do. i think theres a write up in the FAQ's for changing it.

Good strong carb cleaner to loosen up the carbon. It does not evaperate as quick. Two man method on the fuel filter, one on top holding the filter from turning with the big wrench 19mm???,and you on the bottom with the crows foot, the pipe fitting one (flare fitting) and some extensions and your ratchet and breaker bar or cheater bar if needed.

Thought I would update this thread - I cleaned the EGR ports - sure enough - they were all completely plugged solid except for one that was almost plugged. Once I cleaned it all up, and put it back together, problem was solved. Very nice writeups in the FAQ btw.
The whole thing took me about an hour from start to finish.
I will leave the fuel filter for another day (or until I buy the crows foot wrench!).

Thanks again!

Howard.

personally if you have tools, find the time to do it yourself. its easy and i'd imagine they charge atleast $250 or more.
