I was in NY for the weekend of my Spring Break, but I got lost on the highway so I pulled over to a gas station for directions. When I got out and tried to start my car all I could hear is a clicking sound. A mechanic near by said my starter is dying. I got a quote from my mechanic for 200.00 for just the starter. I found one on ebay for about 80.00 new. Should I trust ebay starters even though it's not OEM?

i would problly buy from ebay but check around on cragislist and stuff like that first maybe ull find a cheaper and better 1 buy i would buy from ebay

I have the same problem. My starter is starting to hit the bed also.

Compare the warranty between a starter from a local store and the starter from eBay. Just a quick thought though, if the eBay starter comes with a warranty, how hard is it going to be to get it replaced if need be?

Me personally, I would locally so if there is a problem, I can easily return it for a replacement. Even if they didn't have one in stock they can usually get one in a day or two, atleast you didn't have to waste time with shipping to and from.

Also, when you take you old starter out and before installing the new one, take the old one to a parts store that can check it for you just to be sure it is bad before you go and replace it.

You'd be a little embarassed after replacing the starter, if you find out that the real original problem was a loose battery cable...

I was looking at starters this morning before I went to school and I found one on Ebay for $100 with a 1 year warranty. $100 is better than spending $200. I'm going to keep looking though because on top of buying the starter, I have to pay my mechanic for the labor of putting it in.

Why pay 100 for a 1 year warrantied starter when you can go to AutoZone and get a starter with a limited lifetime warranty for 145?

Check other local part stores as well, you may be able to find one cheaper with the same warranty.

If you have a basic set of hand tools you can replace the starter yourself, it's not hard.

I bought the lifetime one from advance auto, just buy the last starter you'll ever buy. I figure besides normal fluids and brakes, if you get lifetime warranty on your axles, alternator, and starter, whats going to stop your car besides a dead battery, bump start the manual .

Why spend $100 when the contacts only cost $15?
You will be removing the starter anyway, and 5 more bolts you can replace the contacts.
local 'autoelectric' shops will have the contacts.

As someone already said, use another battery or jump start it to make sure the battery is not the problem.

Hey all,

My wife's 2001 lx stopped starting, so I pulled the battery and took it to autozone. They tested it and said it was fine. I put it back and finally got it to start so I drove it over to autozone to have the starter and alternator checked. This time they said the battery was dead but the starter and alt. were fine. So they gave me a new battery and it started up fine. A couple days later it wasn't starting but the alarm was tripping. I trouble shot it with the manual and figured it was the ignition or computer so I had it towed to the dealership. They said it was the starter and that they would gladly replace it for 450 bucks! Yeah... I had it towed back to my house.

I've removed the starter but am wondering what the best replacement brand is. I've been looking at NSA because I'm not confident about remanufactured parts. What do you guys think?

I would just replace the starter.

I would try to find a used one some's selling online. I'm not a fan of remanufactured parts.
