Icon6 99 accord automatic transmission trouble

hi -

having issue with the auto tranmission in my accord, it started slipping a little first thing in the mornings only going into overdrive, I changed the fluid in the trans twice now back to back, 2nd oil change done about 500 miles after first change. problem had gone away, now its been about 2 weeks after oil change and while driving on the interstate the car started kicking in and out of gear... rpm go up and i slow down .... I took the exit and slowed down and pulled auot shifter into 3rd gear, was driving fine for about a mile or 2 and then, same thing slipping in and out of gear, engage - disengage, i had to put into 2nd gear and drive like 8 miles to get home. I have not been able to get it checked for codes or anything as of now, fluid level was fine, nothing obvouis that i saw. anyone else have problem like this, is my tranny gone?? 1st and 2nd gear appear to be working as they should, doesn''t slip or nothing,

Could this just be electrical as far as the TCM??

Any help would be greatly appricated ......

Honda has had some recuring issues with the 6th Gen Accords and Oddesey's and had actually offered a warranty extension to owners of record of '00 and 01's about 4 years ago. Let me see if I can scare up some paperwork for you.
In the mean time; has the car set a code? (the 'Check Engine' lamp will be on)? It could be PCM related (Honda incorporated it into the ECM for the '98 and later years) but I'm thinking more along the lines of trans mounted control solenoids. Let's see who elso chimes in

There's this:

" Winter 2002

American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic
transmission on all 2000-01 Accords, Odysseys, and Preludes. The
automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total
of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of
original sale. We are providing the warranty extension because a higher
than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may
have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 3-
year, 36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. "

This is an excerpt from a letter sent out by Honda to original owners. It
also states:

" If you already paid to have the transmission repaired or replaced,
refer to the reimbursement form included with this letter. "

.....

"Reimbursement eligibility

You may be eligible for reimbursement if you previously paid for
automatic transmission repairs.
- You must have had your vehicle repaired before receiving this notice.
- You must have owned the vehicle at the time of repair. You are still
eligible if you no longer own the vehicle.

NOTE: Any incidental expense or inconvenience you may have suffered due
to the loss of use of your vehicle is not reimbursable.

To apply for reimbursement

- Complete the attached Request for Reimbursement form.
- Include a copy of the repair receipt or invoice for the previous
transmission repair. This should show your vehicle's model, VIN, license
#, the name and address of the facility that did the repair, the cost of
the rapair (parts and labor), and the date the work was completed.
- includde a copy of the cancelled check, bank statement, cash receipt,
or credit card receipt showing that you paid for the repair.

- mail the completed Request for Reimbursement form and copies of the
receipts and invoices to:

American Honda Motor Co.,Inc.
Automobile Customer Service
Automatic Transmission Warranty Extension
P.O. Box 2964
Torrance, CA 90509-2964

Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for reimbursement. "

/END QUOTE

The form asks for name, current address, daytime phone, VIN, mileage at
time of repair, requested amount of reimbursement, towing charges amount
reimbursement (if any), and name of repair shop.

I just thought someone might find this info useful when searching the
usenet for solution to their honda automatic transmission problem,
especially if they bought the car used and did not receive this update

I think its great honda actually came out with this, yet mine is a 1999 and has 196,000+ miles on it so I’m out of the window of getting them to fix it, maybe my AR-15 will like it now…….

How has the car treated you up till now?
My '97 is at 224k now, and other than an A/C Compressor and a set of front brakes; everything else is original.

I lean more towards the M40 myself, but I've never gotten to the point of 'offing' my ride

If you've got an alternate daily driver you can bide your time and come to a little less rash a solution (lol).
You have several avenues available to you; depending on urgency, finances and the general condition of the vehicle.
It sounds like a pretty squared away unit and could (possibly) have another 150k left in it, if the tranny is addressed.
It might be worth your while to have it evaluated by a local transmission specialist (or Honda) where you could get a clearer idea of what's happening. I'm not too happy about your observation that one of your solenoids felt hot (internal short?)

most likely the internal filter clogged some time ago reducing oil flow to the clutch packs and toasting your transmission. This is a COMMON point of failure on these units. I recommend from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (search Kennedy Transmission) that you get a HONDA REMAN UNIT.

Ok so I finally got a chance to work on the Accord, started out by checking the fault codes that have since came in, I had 5 of them two where the same on the code reader so only listing 4

P0700 – Automatic transmission fault
1. indicates trans fault – check other codes.

P1739 – Automatic transaxle concerns

P0740 - TCC solenoid circuit condition
1. open or short circuit
2. Poor electrical condition
3. failed TCC system

P0730 – Faulty shift control system
1. low transmission fluid
1. Poor electrical connection
2. failed transmission shift control system

Now, remember that I did not flush the trans. But just did two consecutive oil changes about 750 miles apart. I first removed the neg. lead from battery (to reset fault on ECU), second removed the solenoids and cleaned the screens, which I did not feel where that bad. Rechecked trans fluid level and decided to take a test run. The car shifts fine, you can gas it and it feels great. Now I am telling you the other night when coming home I honestly thought I was going to teat the CV’s in half the way the car was bucking and slipping in and out of gear, it was bad… I truly felt it was catastrophic to the auto trans.

I still feel like there is something looming inside the trans just waiting for me, I think it would be best to remove the trans from the car and clean it out, and replace the filter, which by the way is got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen on a car – I can not believe you have to remove the trans and separate it just to get to the filter eerrrrrr…. BS!

Any feed back would be great about now… floor open to comments / suggestions

Does this problem also occur in euro Accord Coupe 3.0 V6? (CG model 1998-2003)

My Honda dealer can't tell, there just are too few around..

US market : 2000 Honda Accord Coupe EX
