Default '94 Accord LX - Flashing D4!!

I have a '94 Accord LX automatic! recently my D4 light has been flashing... it did it 2 times today! and it did it a couple months ago!

its hard to explain... it only flashes when i turn the car on! sometimes it will flash and it won't allow me to start the car... while it was flashing i tried to drive it once i got it started and it seems like it was stuck in a higher gear, it had no take off power at all, and i could only go so fast with it like this... its weird! also i noticed whenever it does this, the car makes like a klunking noise and thats how i know its doing it again! but if you can get the car started while its flashing, then turn the car off, then start it again its stops flashing and the car works fine, its really weird!

im just wondering if anyone ever had this trpe of problem?! or if anyone would know what it might be?!

thanks

I doubt the gas smell is related to the trans issue.
You can jumper the blue 2 pin conector at the top of the passenger side kick panel, then turn on the key and count the D4 flashes. When you have the flash code the diagnostic will be easier.

will the code work even if the d4 light isn't flashing at the time?

it only flashes and acts up once in a while!!

here's one site

clear the codes, drive for a bit, read codes again to see if they come back... just to rule out ghost-in-da-machine....

in some cases, in all makes of cars, clearing the codes fixes the problem...

The flashing D4 and codes may be only related to Honda's trouble codes for the auto transmission, and not the same as the general Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

The codes are listed in the shop manuals (such as Helms) under the Transaxle (Auto Tranmission) section.

For example, from what you posted, those codes may possibly be Code 13, 14, 1, and 8.

Code 13: No specific symptom. Possible cause, short or open in Blu/Wht wire between the D3 terminal and ECM; or faulty Barometric Sensor (Baro sensor may be built into ECM).

Code 14: Symptom: Transmission jerks hard when shifting. Possible cause, short or open in Brn/Wht wire between D16 wire and ECM, or Faulty ECM.

Code 8: Symptom: Fails to shift (stuck in 1st or 4th gear). Possible cause, disconnected shift control solenoid valve B connector, or short or open in shift control solenoid valve B wire, or faulty shift control solenoid.

Code 1: Symptom: Lock-up clutch does not engage, or Lock-up clutch does not disengage, or unstable idle speed. Possible cause, disconnect lock-up control solenoid valve A connector, or short or open in lock-up control solenoid valve A wire, or faulty lock-up control solenoid.
