Default 1991 Accord EX wagon CEL on but no CEL codes

I have a 1991 Accord EX wagon automatic with 122K miles on it.

The CEL light is on and stays on but the only flashing code returned when jumping the blue diagnostic connector is from the "S" light and that is a code 14. Mad-Mike's post refers to the FAS-wire and I've seen other lists refer to the TCU code as liner solenoid open or shorted.

THe car runs and drives okay with the exception that at 3100 RPMS or there about and above the engine cuts out and stutters until you let the RPMs drop below that threshhold. Then the transmission will shift and everything will be fine. As long as I drive it "conservatively" and allow the transmission to shift at or below 3000 RPM the car drives fine.

Please help me understand what is going on and if there shouldn't be some other CEL code displayed since the CEL light stays on.

As an aside, the D4 light nor the S light flashes while driving.

I tried an ECU from a different car. It is the A51 version but I don't believe that should make a difference since the difference in the A50 and A51 is a software revision or model year. The A50 being from my 1991 and the A51 being from a 1992 or 1993.

I still have all of the same symptoms and codes.

CEL light on with no codes displayed and "S" light flashing a 14.

I realize now that the engine stuttering or cutting out is the is actually the REV limiter activating at the 3200 RPM mark.

I have a source for a TCU with a different number that I may try to see if that is the issue. Seems a little funny to me that the TCU would cause the REV limiter to activate but maybe not.

I tested the ECU witout actually remounting it to the floor board. I'm not sure if that would affect it or not. The negative battery cable was removed during the removal of the original ECU and installation of the replacement.

Any comments or ideas?

FAS code will only cause the D4 lamp to blink and will not set the CEL on constant.

Most likely it is just the BRN/WHT wire that is between the 22Pin and 26Pin connectors between the ECM and TCM.
Either the pins are loose/corroded/broken wire, or the wire is grounding/shorting out somewhere.

With ignition turned to II(ON) *wait a moment*
Measure the voltage between D16(+) and A25 or A26(-)
Is there ~5V?

Yes.
Check for loose connectors, if possible check using a known good TCM.

No.
Turn ignition to I(OFF)
Disconnect TCM from car harness.
Turn Ignition to II(ON)
Measure voltage between D16(+) and A25 or A26(-) terminals.
Is there ~5V?

Yes.
Check for loose connectors.

No.
Disconnect 26 Pin ECM connector.
Check for continuity between D16 and A25 or A26 terminals.
Is there continuity?

Yes.
Repair short in BRN/WHY(FAS) wire between TCM and ECM.

No.
Disconnect the 26pin and 22 pin connector
Check for continuity between D16(22P connector) and A18(26P connector).
Is there continuity?

Yes. Check for loose TCM connectors, or use a known good TCM.

No.
Repair OPEN in BRN/WHT (FAS) wire.

Thank you very much for the time that you took to write the test procedures for me Mike.

I'll give these a go and report back my findings.

Happy New Year!

I didn't work on the wagon anymore after Mad Mike sent me the test procedure until today. I had found that the carpet on the passenger side was SOAKED when I pulled it up to gain access to the ECU/ATCU. I let it dry out for the past almost 3 months and today decided to put the ECU and ATCU back in and see what happened. The car fired right up. It had a miss at idle for a few minutes { not suprising for as long as it had been sitting w/o being started) but then straightened out. I decided to drive it to see how it was shifting and lo and behold it revved up and shifted at higher RPMs just fine. Apparently, it was the moisture causing all of the issues and giving me the code 14 from the ATCU.

I still have a CEL on and need to see what that is about. the engine also cuts out between 1200 and 2700 RPM with a miss kinda like a rev limiter but past 2700 RPM it will rev straight to red line. Need to figure out what the cause of that is as well. Probably plugs, and rotor. Possibly oil in the plug wells. I haven't checked yet.

Just checked CEL codes and have a 14 and 41. Would either the IACV or O2 sensor cause the engine to miss between 1200 and 2700 RPMs?
