Precision turbo 5858
So I've had my turbo on for about 1500 miles and its starting to smoke really bad. I and see the oil spitting out the DP. I've done a crap load of research and reading and from what I'm getting its pretty much hit or miss with these and oil getting past the seals. I now know I should run a restrictor. My question is will running a resctictor now help or are the seals done and I need to rebuild it?
Thanks for any help that you guys can provide.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
My 5857 was puking a bit of oil last fall and I thought the seals were done.
If you don't have a restrictor, definitely get a 0.060" restrictor. That's what B&R Fittings gave me when I bought the turbo from him with a 4an line.
And turns out my oil puking issue was from my return line melting and the rubber collapsed putting too much back pressure on the drain line. Once i fixed it I haven't seen a drop....
I doubt your seals are gone...

Re: Precision turbo 5858
welcome to the precision world!!like beenba said Install a restrictor in fact of high oil pressure at cold start and wot condition...most honda f/i-n/a built have high oil pressure. so combined to the weak oil seal of the precision turbo it mostly cause oil seal failure in regardless of a good drain configuration and dont listen what precision said about using a restrictor or not.....

I have checked my return line and it looks good. I'll post a picture of it. So you think if I add a restrictor I should be good?

Re: Precision turbo 5858
The steel thrust retainer plate precision uses is the cause of a lot of failures. It doesn't dissipate heat like the brass units and ultimately ends up nuking the thrust bearing and/or the seals

I'm using a -4 line.
Wantboost- are you saying in need to get it rebuilt? Putting a restrictor won't help at this point?

Re: Precision turbo 5858
What are the chances of Precision doing anyhing about it? I'm assuming nothing. I purchased the turbo a couple years ago but didnt put it on until a few weeks ago. I was putting the build together this entire time.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
Obviously the high oil pressure in the chra has pushed oil past the oil seal, which is a little metal oil control ring. You can try putting the restrictor inline to see if it improves... kinda hit or miss after it starts pushing oil into the housing though.
I have always run a -4 to my Precision turbos without a restrictor fed from a GE oil filter adapter. Occationally I would get a little puff from the exhaust at cold start or decel but nothing crazy. Been a couple years on my 6265 though (seeing as much as 34# on the dyno) and it finally is starting to puff a little more. I put a restrictor inline and it is a little better but probably needs going through soon.
I kinda expected it on mine though at some point. I see just at 90# of oil pressure at cold start or with RPM. about 35# at idle.
Precision will rebuild it and put a new seal in it if you want to send it back in... they have a form you fill out and request an RMA number to send it back. As long as the wheels and everything are in good shape it should not be anything dramatic.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
depend on how many time you have run it with a defficient restrictor/drain setup...but most of time the seal are good,,just drop a restrictor in it..and test..go by size!!! i did this and have got the great spot at .065 on a -4 feedline 80 psi of oïl pressure at cold start and 75 psi at wot...pressure at idle is 20-25 psi depend on oïl temp

I'm going up to Element Racing to pick up a restrictor right now. I'm hoping this helps but I have a feeling I will need to have it rebuilt. Its spitting pretty good out the DP

Re: Precision turbo 5858
I can't catch a freaking break. Picked up 2 resctictors. They are 2 big and won't screw into the turbo. grrrrrr..

Re: Precision turbo 5858
this is why you should go by size...but most case .065 on a journal precision bearing is required...BUT with good oïl pressure on a good drain setup and -4 feedline..2800 km on my 5858 and no problem

Re: Precision turbo 5858
Could anyone tell me what size is the one on the left? The one one the right is the one I was originally running. When I called the guy at the shop I had asked If he had a 0.60 0.065 restrictor he said yes to come and pick it up. I just want to make sure.
Not sure why I can't post the image from my phone????

Re: Precision turbo 5858
Here are a couple pics of my return. Seems alright to me from what I've researched and found.
Again I apologize about the pictures. It won't let me load them right from my phone.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
Your return line setup looks fine. Exactly what mine looks like. For what it's worth, I have the 5857 turbo, a few weeks after the first install, I noticed a pretty good amount of oil in my charge pipes. This worried the heck out of me. Did I blow my seals? Went with one of these:

And have had dry charge pipes and a healthy running turbo since. No oil pressure related issues whatsoever. It just needed that little bit of pressure restriction and fixed it right up. My money is on needing that restrictor and you'll be happy-boosting from now on.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
Thanks for the help guys. I put the restrictor on last night and the smoking has gone down. Not sure if the smoke coming out now is just the oil burning off in the DP and exhuast side of the turbo. I'm going to let it run for awhile today to see if there is any change.
I'm still a bit confused as to how to text and play with restrictor sizes. How will I know if I'm not getting enough oil to it? Do I just need to go by rule of thumb that a .060-.065 I'd big enough or will it act different? Should I put some sort of gauge after the restrictor that won't harm the turbo for that second I'm checking?
Thanks again for the help.

Re: Precision turbo 5858
I don't know if it matters but there was barely anything, barely as in just a little wet to the tocuh and it only goes in about half an inch, in the charge pipe but drips off the v band clamp and out the DP if the car is jscked up in the front.
TheShodan thanks for posting the picture for me.

All you have to do is put the "/" at the end of the img brackets..
use
you can do that yourself after this last one here.
Bottom line, too much oil pressure. Use proper .065" restrictor. Stop driving car until that's done. If it still smokes like crazy afterwards, you've killed the oil sealing ring.
Precision will not pay for that. Warranty card or not.. You will have to have the oil sealing ring replaced, as well as possibly thrust bearing.
If you're in doubt with the restrictors you have.. go ahead, Man up, and order the right one.
