Which is better for turbo, 18lb or 14 lb flywheel?
Hi,
I'm going turbo soon and will also end up getting a new clutch. While I have the tranny off should I replace my LS flywheel w/ an ITR flywheel?
Also, if I do replace it, is there anything I should look for or watch out for when buying a used ITR flywheel?
Thanks.

I replaced mine with an ITR flywheel and didn't feel it revved as fast as it should..so now I'm looking for a 11-12lb flywheel which would compliment my drag kit nicely

Don't go too light with a flywheel on turbo. Reason being, true it may rev quicker, but it will drop you out of boost much quicker as well conversely. 14lbs is probably a good weight.

Re: Which is better for turbo, 18lb or 14 lb flywheel? (SiRkid)
I know not to go too light. There's too light, to heavy, and a happy middle. I want to know if 14lb is a noticable difference from 18lb. Is it light enough to rev up quickly, but heavy enough to stay in boost? Does it drop out of boost too fast? Or does it not rev up quickly enought to make a difference?
The main reason I'm asking is cuz this will probably be the only time I'll have my tranny off, so if I do want to upgrade my flywheel this is the only time.
Also, ITR flywheels are good quality (OEM) and pretty cheap.

I had my GSR flywhhel lightened to 12lbs, it is not light enough. I can tell a little differnce but it is not huge. I deal with a number of hills and stop and go traffic and there is no problem with stalling. When I go into the trans again I think I am going to try a 9-10lbs flywheel.

I do not understand how you can 'drop out of boost' with the light flywheel. These people are shifting and then re-engaging the clutch after they put the clutch in right? If you are RACING then you are trying to shift fast, and you are not going to "drop out" of boost. I say... as long as you have decent idle and do not stall the car (anything above 7lbs is fine for this)... then go for it. Lighter = better in almost all scenarios.

Actually the heavier the flywheel, then the better for drag racing. Read a whole write up on this from some domestic website, cant remember the addy offhand. But it stated something along the lines that it will "hold" the torque and transfer better to the ground. Road racing or aggressive street driving is a whole different story.

also i thought boost is based on load and not RPM's.....if your in 3rd going to 4th, as long as you floor it when you hit 4th even if your RPM's isnt as high you should still be boosting alot right ? or am i mixed up on sumthing ?

This thread is back eh? Just get the R flywheel, anyone who knows their stuff will tell you a 14lb flywheel is better then an 18lb flywheel for turbo. As long as it's above 9lbs, it won't give you any problems.

Check out SPOON. They have a flywheel that is 9lbs. jdmhondaparts.com
I think the price is $368, but I can't remember.

try to stick to an intermediate weight since speed/poer shifting is really out of the question with boost. The lighter flywheel will rev down quick. You also lose a bit og torque with the lighter flywheel.

Surprised nobody has mentioned BLOW OFF VALVES here. Even if your revs drop while you're shifting, a BOV allows the turbo wheel to continue spinning at nearly the same speed it was before you let off the gas, until you finish your shift and floor it again, the BOV closes, and boost is back. And as soon as you engage the next gear, your revs are going to be the same no matter if you have a 30 lb. or 40-oz. flywheel.

Re: Which is better for turbo, 18lb or 14 lb flywheel? (00SilverLS)
got my 7.5lb CM for 255. it works just fine. the clutch is new, so i cant get on it really hard yet, but i have blasted into traffic a few times and there is NO problem with the wheel so far. i think you should take advice from the people using the products in question, not from people who know what "it should" do or "read something somewhere." has anyone here had a bad experience with a flywheel being too light and dropping out of boost or something like that?
