Any bolt or stud in the floor pan of the car, seat and seat-belt bolts and studs work very well, surface must be clean and free of paint, down to bare metal, if in trunk, the bolts that hold bumper in the frame rail or the studs at the top of the shock towers.
Your friend is correct, the tail light studs and nuts are not a good spot.
Mount the amp to the back of the back seat and run the ground to the closest seat belt bolt, don't forget to add the same gauge, [at least] ground from batt. to a front shock tower stud. 94

Re: Grounding Help 98 Civic!!
i usually drill a 1/4" hole and get a bolt/nut/washer/star washer combo and make a super tight compression ground where i need it and as stated the most important thing is having the connection point clean to the bare metal, or else flow of electrons will be very poor. Also keep ground as short as possible.

A bolt around the tail light area behind a panel and u can also sand down around it and get the paint off for better ground or get a screw driver and scratch the paint around it so it pure metal

ANY Metal Surface On Car! well any part of the shell
especially if a threaded nut is welded there.
Plenty of bolts and nuts in rear w/out touching the taillamp, and yes that is exactly what my brother did and it works fine. As long as the ground wire does not touch the bulbs power wire, ther will be no problem. The entire Chassis is common ground for everything. If you look at battery, nothing is connected directly to the Neg terminal except Chassis
