[97 Accord] replace car stereo + speakers?
hi,
I have a 97 Honda Accord DX (it's actually the value package). Anyway, I'd like to replace my car's audio system.
So how do I go about replacing the stereo itself and all 4 speakers?
Do I need special tools / harness to replace the stereo?
Will 6.5in speakers fit into my door?
Replacing the door speakers seemed pretty easy. I took off the cover and saw some screws. Or is there more to it? I hope I don't have to remove the door panel?!
How do I remove the rear speakers?
Any advise? I'm many of you have done that 1000 times
thank you

Re: [97 Accord] replace car stereo + speakers? (tom48)
the grills will pop off for the fron doors
if yoy replace them with a deeper speaker removing the door panel and cutting off the basket is required.
For the rear speakers I would recomend removing the back seat and the back deck. There are a lot of cheesy ways to get to the rear speakers, but id it is your first time. Take your time and get the seats out. It gives you a better area to work and less of a chance to break anything
Now for the stereo.
Remove the center console, and the lower dash where the 12 volt plug is.
That will give you access to the two 8mm? bolts that hold the stereo in. They are in the rear of the stock stereo bolted the the metal dash frame. Then push it out the front.
If you have stock keyless entry you will have to use the t harness and retain the stereo
If you don't then you need to jump the green with a black stripe and the green with the red stripe wires located in the green plug to retain your domelight
and you are set
If this is confusing, sorry I am a bit tired I have been playing plumber all day and on my way back out to home depot

thank you for your answer. I really appreciate it.

I see. So I don't have to remove the door panel as long as the dimensions don't change. According to the manufacturer:
Standard 6.5'' Size Fits OEM Locations
Mounting Depth: 2''
I'm not sure what they mean by OEM locations. Do you think they will fit without me having fiddling with the door panel?

do you mean flipping the back seat over or physically taking it out?

I don't have keyless entry or anything fancy (not even a car alarm). What do you mean by "jump the green with a black stripe and the green with the red stripe wires"? This is a little confusing, why would the new stereo need more cables?
thank you

Re: [97 Accord] replace car stereo + speakers? (tom48)
ya remove the entire back seat, it takes longer but it is easier
The wires I was referring to retain your domelight
If you dont jump those wires it no longer works when you open your door

@ J's91Teg
that picture is great. do you happen to have a higher resolution pic?
As far as I can tell, the doors won't fit 6.5" is there an easy to do it?
Also, the speakers come with cables. How hard is it to get install them?
I don't understand the terminology "to jump the cables". Splitting them?
thanks

Ditto what J's91Teg said/showed.
This may help a little also, and get this kit... http://www.metraonline.com/dow...2.pdf
The Metra 70-1720 wiring harness, and two sets of Metra 72-7800, speaker harness adapters.
Get standard 6.5" speakers for the front and rear, or 6x9s if that is what your Accord has in the rear. 94

ok, so I've measured my door speakers (see picture attached). I'm not sure if the rubber ring is part of the measurement. Maybe someone could take a look at the picture and tell me whether it is. Without the ring it is 6" and with the ring it is 6.5".
thanks

ok, so I bought the Stereo, the Dash Kit and the Harness as recommended in this thread. I wanted to install it today, but I can't figure out how to remove the old stereo
The instructions that came with the Dash Kit (http://www.metraonline.com/dow...2.pdf ), didn't really help. So, I've attached some pictures, maybe you can help.
I've removed one screw, as you can see in picture 4.
thank you

You have to remove that entire center section. Did you follow these directions:
They seem to be pretty clear to me

@ White Smoke
I don't have an ash tray. Unless they are referring to that thing next to the cigarette lighter. However, there is no way I can remove that (unless there is some secret to it), because it is one piece and wraps around the automatic transmission handle.

Re: [97 Accord] replace car stereo + speakers? (tom48)
ok, I've followed the instructions and everything went smoothly.
Anyway, when I connected the stereo it didn't turn on. I connected the harness and it made some sound as if it was calibrating itself. That was it, it didn't turn on. (the faceplate was detached at that time). I then put on the faceplate and put the car keys in. But it still wouldn't work.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I then connected the factory stereo. It also made that calibrating sound, but it also doesn't turn on anymore. The anti-theft light (totally bogus, because I don't have a car alarm), is still blinking as usual, so it is getting electricity.
Can someone help?
thank you

You have blown the acc. fuse, the sound you hear is the unit "inizializing" it is putting the CD transport into it's "ready for a disk" mode, that power comes from the HU constant power, the "turn on" comes from the HUs acc., check the radio fuse in the under dash fuse box. 94

Re: [97 Accord] replace car stereo + speakers? (fcm)
fcm, thank you so much for your answer. I really appreciate it.
I've a hard time locating the fuse box. I also checked the manual. Is the "acc" fuse you mentioned the same as the "Radio, Cigarette Lighter Fuse"? That's the closet match I could find by looking at the manual. That fuse, however, is located in the under-hood fuse box. I still need to find the Interior Fuse Box though, because it is supposed to be equipped with a fuse puller as well as a spare fuse that would have the same power rating.
So, where do I find the interior fuse box? Is it on the drivers or passengers side? Also, is the "acc" fuse the same as the "Radio, Cigarette Lighter Fuse"?
thank you

It shouldn't be to difficult.... You just have to buy speaker wire a ground wire, and a amp wires.... If you plan on puttin subs in your trunk...

removing the rear grill is the same.. just pull it out. as for the rear speakers, go in the trunk and look under where the speakers are, there should be some screws there.

The interior fuse box is on the drivers side. It if flush again the floor kick panel. There is a **** you can twist and the cover should come off. Below the cover, there is a label of all the fuses.

I would listen to thatasiankidtony about location of the interior fuse box, [drivers kick panel] I am not sure about location in a 97 Accord, however, the radio acc. fuse should be on the under dash, [interior] fuse box, I don't know of any Honda/Acura where it is in the engine bay fuse box. 94

I don't have a picture on my pc but here is the area it is in
It's a black cover you have to pop off. The have a sticker on the top with the fuse locations if your's hasn't been removed.

thank you guys. I really appreciate your help.
So I found the box. The radio fuse was in the engine fuse box, whereas the fuse tool and the spare was in the interior fuse box. The interior fuse box is really hard to find. I had to open the driver door all the way and pretty much lie on the seat. Anyway, everything is good now
