Re: deschlong's restoration of a '93 Si Hatch - lots of OEM goodness
Appreciate all the new subscribers! Thanks.
Road tripped south to North Dakota this weekend to pick up nearly a dozen packages full of Honda parts, tools and other goodies all waiting for me at a depot there. US shipping is cheap (as are prices!) but it's a 5hr drive, so in order to make it worthwhile ... you have to order lots of stuff.
Final haul looks like this:
Note there is a box there with an MFactory logo on it. The new Tokico coilovers are buried in the pile also. I'm starting to run out of places to put stuff in my garage. Pile it higher and deeper I guess. On that topic - I was thinking about how if any of you 5th Gen enthusiasts had a look at what I have in this garage your jaws would probably all collectively drop to the floor.
Anyway, the return trip on Sunday deserves an entry in my top 10 of all-time worst winter driving conditions - and I have driven some pretty hairy stuff in my day. (BTW, spring is really taking its sweet-*** time arriving, here.) A white knuckler for 2/3rds of the way. It just re-emphasizes to me why I purchase excellent winter tires. Always remember, folks: It's not a race home to see who can be in first place. Drive to the conditions and take your time -- and arrive alive!
It was a weird slush / packed ice combo mixed with blowing snow, making for some nasty driving. Here is one photo that gives an idea:
It's not particularly terrible in that pic - I was just trying to give you an idea. There was about 150km of that.
The effect on the car was equally nasty, and any small bump would make it sound like the car was bottoming out ... well, it was in a way because the ice buildup in the wheel wells and rockers would make contact with the tire and road respectively. It's not snow you can just kick away - it's actually hard-as-rock ice! To give you an idea:

Also, have a CEL coming on. Only happens at highway speeds, and figured out on this trip that it only happens above about 3500 RPM (so say, when you accelerate to pass someone as opposed to cruising speed). I was expecting to see it, and this is the first time I've been out on the highway since diagnosing it when I first saw it back in February. It's a CODE 1, which is O2 sensor. Sometimes a bad fuel filter can also cause this (so says Ron@HT) but that's just been replaced so it's not that. I have a spare sensor so I'll put swapping it in on the to-do list.
Interestingly, I tracked my fuel economy and I was getting about 7 to 7.5L/100km -- about what is expected for the D16Z6.

I know it's a little late now, but you're really not supposed to get primer wet. It's porous.
Also, is that an LSD I spy?

That is a lot of boxes!!! Crazy pic of the ice build up. I live in Florida so I have only seen snow 3x in my life! Can't wait for the contents of those boxes to make their way onto the hatch.

^ Hah. Well I had a look around and just about every flat surface has some sort of interesting/optional/rare Honda Civic part on it. Not to mention that more surprises are inside a lot of storage bins. No pics because stuff that's just in boxes is pretty boring, isn't it? But, if you look at my planned installation list I already have the vast majority of those items, just to give you an idea.

^ Sure; here we go:
OEM JDM Honda Access Hatchback/Coupe Optional Stainless Steel Door Sills
Optional item for JDM Civics. Comes in a set for Hatch/Coupe style as well as Sedan.
When mounted it looks like this:
OEM Honda D-series "1.6 VTEC" Valve Cover
OEM valve cover only available on the Canadian Acura EL 1.6. (Technically, not an original feature for the 5G Civic, but it *is* the rarest and arguably nicest of all D-series VTEC VCs.)
OEM EDM Honda Access Optional Dual-Tip Muffler
Only available in European market.
OEM JDM EG6 Stainless Steel Silver Roof Mouldings
I don't have a really good shot of this, but you can just make it out in this shot of the SiR-S shell I bought:

Nice build! Just got my first 94 civic hatchback. I was in the toyota game with the AE86. Always had a soft spot for those hatchback civics though.

Thanks guys. Been on a little vaccay so not much to update right now. But, I did hit the jackpot at some local wrecker yards. A couple of highlights include: 4G & 5G lower consoles, leather-wrapped steering wheel, floor mats galore in good condition, armrests, rear cargo covers, mudflaps, gauge clusters, 4G moonroof visor, etc. Most of this will be for sale so be sure to keep your eyes on the lookout! Going back today for some more stuff if I can muster the energy so be sure to keep your eyes on the lookout for a future FS thread.

Hey all,
Small update. Here's a couple photos of the new suspension to be mounted on the car. Tokico RAK502-I coilovers. These are essentially the Tokico Illumina shocks mated with their 502 springs, mounted on a threaded collar. As you can see there is some assembly required. I'll need to reuse my stock top hats and the tapered washer above the bump stop.
I'm sure I can figure out where all the little bits and parts go sitting on the right ... slightly confusing at the moment, however - hah.
