Default synthetic oil...yes or no? 03 base rsx 5speed

hey i got a 03 rsx base model 5 speed. I usualy do castrol 5w30. I drive around 4k miles. I realized that synthetic cost like $5 more and people say that you can run it twice as much as regular.
But at the same time I read something negative about synthetic oil.

Your advice..what should I run?

btw my rsx is silver. What color foglights (like the plastic cover) fits the best...black...grey?

base is supposed to do 5W-20, I think you shud just stick to that. Try to stock up on synthetic when its on sale. I'm running Mobil 1 in my Type S no prob. I would run a max of 6K tho, and thats adding a quart at like 4.

Don't use 5w20... Honda stopped using it on the a3 because it was causing the cam to grind! Use 5w30 that is what Honda recommends...

Also I run 5w40 Motul... make the engine start and run very smooth! I notice 2 mpg more since I switched... I noticed the same with my Type-R too
Just make sure you go with a full synthetic oil like Motul, Royal Purple, Castrol Syntec, Amsoil, Elf... Mobil1 isn't a full synthetic oil!

I use Royal Purple 10w-30 in my B16 i love it. My first motor lasted me 4 years and i beat it to death, but it did not die. After about 80000 miles it started to smoke a little at bout 7500 rpm. Found out later it was caused by a rich condition, oil was washing off the cylinder walls. My "new" motor has bout 20k that i put on it, idk the previous millage, but i will never run anything else. I'm gonna switch to a Royal Purple filter soon too. Great oil.

Royal Purple FTW! I've seen Royal Purple take a beating on bench tests and its one of the few that maintains consistency and lubrication after lots of heat and pressure being applied. So it should work out nicely in your application.

Make sure to read up on the filter... as you wouldn't want to have a paper filter! I use the HAMP S2000 filter which is OEM.

I saw a video on the Royal Purple filter and it is a full synthetic filter. They say that they do not use paper in the filter it is a fiberglass blend or something. It supposedly filters out 99.9 of all contaminants in the oil. The video is on their website. http://www.royalpurple.com/

Lots of the turbo/FI guys do, but otherwise it doesn't make much sense for NA motors.

you can't compare it to the Mobil1 (that we have over here in NA) as its not a full synthetic! The castrol synthec is!

The main reason why people freak out over this oil is because it comes out purple but other then that its just a decent oil synthetic oil... I'll find article where they tested a lot of the major brands of synthetic and Royal Purple wasn't in the top 5. Amsoil edged the Motul oil by a hair in the test... Again not saying its not a good oil its just that people make it out to be something its not because of its appearance when being poured!

Let me correct something here before anything...

Mobil1 does make fully synthetic oil... just that the stuff that is being sold in NA at walmart and such is a semi-synthetic. You can find their fully synthetic oil which is good... not the greatest but still a good oil!

Amsoil and Motul have been leading the market for who offers the best oil! Amsoil is still the best... but I prefer Motul just cause it runs so smooth and I have been using it for the last 8 years no problem!

Ill find the article it was posted about 3-4 years ago on HT.

in a lot of charts when comparing oils Mobil1 is never in those test against the other full synthetic... most mention that the oil Mobil1 ships to NA is a semi-synthetic and not like the EU which gets the full synthethic.

Yup use 5w30 in your Base NOT 5w20. **** I have used motorcraft synthetic blend from walmart for a minute and my Base runs great.

At the moment got full synthetic mobil1 cuz it was on sale at the base.

I use amsoil for my 5 speed tranny though and works great.

This isn't an oil brand/preference thread. We have plenty of those on HT. The question at hand is whether to use synthetic oil or not. Soo...

IMO I would say yes. The reason synthetic oil is better to use is because of the additives in it that help keep your motor and seals in better condition than a traditional oil that may be lacking the extra additives that would benefit your motor. Also, like you found out, depending on what oil/brand you do use the cost is not a significant raise. So, I would say go with synthetic. I personally have ran nothing but in every car I've ever owned and have never had a problem. On the other hand, I don't know anyone that can say they had an issue because they didn't use synthetic. As for what brand to use, do your research and decide, we don't need this thread to turn into another "What kind of oil should I use?" thread, now do we?
