Default Help failed smog due to high HC and my timing was retarded!

my results were...

HC (PPM)
MAX AVE MEASUR
61 9 61<- my results
45 7 31<- my results

My timing was also retarded, which is worse because once i advance it to factory spec im afraid the numbers might be higher. My timing was at 12BTDC, so although i barely passed smog i failed because of the timing.

The following mods are gsr swap into an ls reusing all obd2 sensors and components, comptech icebox, stock header, and greddy sp2 exhaust. and a Skunk2 IM pro.

Before i went in i had my evap sensor disconnected but plugged it back in this morning but i dont think that had to do with anything. I took the test on a almost empty tank.

So my results basically say that my car is emitting to much Hydrocarbons. The next time i go back im going to try to put my stock exhaust on and put 89 octane? would that help? should i also check for exhaust leaks?

I'd definitely run 91 octane. What year is the car? I bet IF you got a new CAT your car would pass with ease...

well just look at it from the basics, excessive hydrocarbons means unburned fuel in the exhaust, first off put the timing to stock, honda knows what there doing, make sure your plugs are gapped right, ignition system is up to par, just make sure the engine is healthy, i would also say make sure its completely warmed up. I dont think the exhaust is really going to do anything.

Give us a total list of your modifications, do you have a adjustable fuel pressure reg.?

Retarding the Timing will lower emission's allowing the car to run cleaner at low RPM's (for smog). I usally run 14 Degrees for smog.

It could be alot of things from a basic tune-up to your cat / charcol canister, as they all do alot for smog.

post your pull results of the smog test please.

and before you go in for smog take the car for a LONG drive and make sure its well heated.

very true, thats why the smog tech said he is worried that if my timing is advanced where it supposed to be, my HC numbers will exceed the limit. i will tyr to scan my sheet soon

RUn 91 octane, make sure your oil is changed, and an ignition tune up. Old oil can make a big difference in your emission results.
