Default OIL In Cyl #3 - SparkPlugs Coverred - Smokes A Little, Need Diagnosis

This is a brand new rebuilt d16a6 motor, total bottom end is 100% new with new parts, the head is completely built and was previously used for 4500 miles and then slapped on my motor.
The car ran great for the first 3K or so Ive had it and just recently I noticed that after the car is fully warmed up and you go for a drive. Come to a stop or slow down hard, the car will kind of billow smoke. Not to heavy but enough to surround the car and into the cabin a bit.

Smelt like burning oil so I pulled the plugs, sure enough #3 was SOAKED, a good 1/2 teaspoon all up the threads and on the tip of the plug.

I did some research and found that the valve cover gromets like to fail on people, picked up a brand new set and threw em in, didnt work.

Now this problem doesnt seem to be constant, the car has gone a day before without smoking, but today it smoked at almost every full stop.

It will not smoke if you start the car up from cold and let it idle, no smoke at all.

Im lost on what it could be or how I could fix it.

First thing.

Do a compression and leakdown test.

Dont have a leakdown tester

What would that show?

My car was doing something similar, did a leakdown test and confirmed my rings were bad in one cylinder. If it happens on deceleration it could also be your valve stem seals on the head as well. Id do a leakdown test as someone stated above for sure then go from there. good luck

Well Theres oil on the dam threads of the spark plug, to me that mens its coming from the top.... right?

I did just replace the valve cover orings though so I cant see that being the problem, would teflon do anything there or would it just burn up?

Just because the motor is new and rebuilt doesnt mean that is wasnt rebuild properly. do a leakdown and that will let you know what is wrong

it sounds like you have a bad valve seal to me

Have a catch can? I had this happen on an engine. Not saying it's happening with your's. So much crank case pressure it was pushing through the seals. Installed catch can and nuff said

Is there oil all over the spark plug wire that connects to the plug? If the spark plug seals are upside down that will do it.

Are they hard to change?

Im gonna swap in another valve cover tonight with a new gasket. Hope that does something but I highly doubt it

What else could it be?

possible busted ringland (broken piston).

eitehr way the motor needs to be torn down.

ha, it's definitely not time for a rebuild yet , he hasn't given us much of any information yet.

Its not the valve cover. Its not the valvecover gasket. Think about things a little and quit being close minded... and YES, you ARE being close minded by assuming that because the block was just rebuilt that it CAN'T be anything in the block. This is not the correct way to look at things...

1). You have oil all over the spark plug
2). Your engine is smoking

That right there CONFIRMS that oil is entering the combustion chamber, and at a decent rate. If the oil WAS leaking past the past the valve cover spark plug tube seals, it would be at a slow rate. Even slower once it had to work its way down through the threads of the spark plug... which I don't think it even could.

Now, go do a compression test. Then come on here and post the rediculously low numbers in the #3 so we can tell you you fried either the rings or the ring lands.

Also, when you post this info, also include the following. You said the motor was rebuilt, but was it rebuilt with stock parts? Forged pistons? what? Also, did you tune it or just slap boost on it and go?

Yes I understand oil is getting in the combustions chamber, but if you read when it may change your mind where its coming from

If I start the car cold it will NOT smoke, when driving around under boost or vacuum it will NOT smoke. It only smokes OCCASIONALLY (about every 3rd time I stop) when i come to a hard stop and sometimes when just coming to a slow stop, once I start moving again, it goes away.....

Im going to do a compression test in 10 minutes

The motor was rebuilt with vitara pistons and eagle rods, head is fully built with aftermarket parts

i would recommend getting it leakdown instead of compression testing it

I still think the problem is in the lower end. Do the compression test. Since you don't have a leak down tester available, its a starting point... lets see the results of the comp test.....

Compression Test Results - 130 - 130 - 130 - 130

Damn that made me smile seeing those numbers , whether they mean something or not

I really would like to know how oil is getting all over my dam spark plug though
