Thanks again! We've got a guy over on a supersecret prelude forum and he wants to do dry sleeves and forged pistons. Trying to convince him to go with the Mahles, but he wants 100,000km (62,000miles). Just trying to see if anyone's ever had them last that long.

This is one thing I found about 88-91 prelude's with the same sleeve's

The B21A1 was basically a re-worked B20A5 with an increase in bore to 83mm. The external block dimensions had to stay identical to the B20A5 block so Honda called upon Saffil to create a thin but strong cylinder liner called FRM (Fiber Reenforced Metal) which basically consisted of a carbon fiber matrix, aluminum alloy, and aluminum oxide to make a very strong cylinder sleeve. These sleeves are so strong that they often do not lose thier factory cross-hatching marks after 200,000 miles! A lot of B21A1 engines burn oil and have low cylinder compression numbers because the FRM material is so strong that is tears up piston rings. Good news though, you can usually replace the piston rings without any honing to the sleeves and go another 100,000+ miles without any sleeve wear.

Very old thread but it helps to remind a lot of new members who have no idea that the FRM technology was first implemented in the 3rd gen Honda Prelude, specifically the 90-91 B21a1 motor.

If Mahle made a piston and ring set for this motor, it would outlast most other motors out there today.

And it could be boosted since its an OBD1 motor as well.

so far i have about 7k in the motor, tune na and about 180 on 9;1 compression, just got my turbo installed, street tuned on 5psi, took a trip from Raleigh NC to NYC, beat on it on the way and motor behaved it self, very happy with the outcome, only problem im having is now in NC the weather is between 92 and 100 degrees so the car tends to overheat a little, going to ad push fans in the front soon.

Almost one year at 20 psi boost and she's still running like champ - compression ratios great across the board!

Still have the Mahles in there going three years strong. Last year I put down 517WHP with stock cams, crappy intake manifold, little injectors, and a small fuel pump. I just ordered a golden eagle intake manifold, 1300cc deash works injectors and a walbro 400 fuel pump. She will be back on the dyno in roughly about 3 weeks in a quest for more power. I need 10's!!!

My set up
Stock H22A head and Block (closed deck 87mm)
Mahle 9.0:1 87mm pistons
Eagle Rods
ACL Racing bearings
Precision Turbo
1200cc Injectors
Skunk2 IM
AEM fuel rail
Blox 70mm TB

So my question is, is this ring gap formula right?

87mm X 25.4 = 3.425

3.425 X .0050 = .017 (top ring)
3.425 X .0040 = .013 (middle ring)
These.....^^ numbers were on the Mahle box with the pistons.

However it just seems a bit too small of a gap for me. Im planing on pushing at least 400HP but want to make sure the gap is right.

Does anyone know the right gap or if this is the right gap?

Thank you guys. And if you need any more info to figure it out just let me know

I went with the gap that Mahle requested to do so.

so the numbers i came up with are correct? Top ring .017 and second ring .013? It just does not look right to me :-/

I don't want to be the guy who says it's right or wrong. All I am saying is I went with what Mahle told me to do. And what that was I do not remember. They do have customer service and you could call and ask to double check tho I know that much soory I cant help you out on that one man.

Ok made a trip back to the dyno this past weekend. Switched out the Venom intake manifold for a Golden Eagle and threw in a set of Skunk2 pro 1 cams with a fuel system upgrade including 1300cc injectors, Walbro 400 pump, and -7 fuel lines tuned on 110 VP fuel and she put down 560whp and 420tq. King Motorsports in WI did the tuning again. Next day went to the track and broke into the 10's and she is running STRONG! Here is a pass with the go-pro inside up against a H-series hatch with spray.

What's the options for putting these into a h23a bluetop? I've did a few searches. But find conflicting info,, would like to end up around 12-1comp. N use forged rods even if they need to be custom length, I don't really want the piston sitting out the hole,,

If you use the zeal compression calculator, you can work out what dish and rod length you will need to get that ratio.

Hey guys this is my first post on H-T although I have spent untold hours on here doing research for myself and my small group of friends..I have an H22a that recently developed a rod knock, I got it on the stand in my bedroom and stripped it in my free time to find no crank damage or rod damage but the bearing is of course shot (but not spun..just worn severely) judging by the sludge in the engine and the short time I've owned it I would say it was poorly cared for by the prior owner

Thats besides the point and kinda off topic tho. I purchased a set of Mahle 11.5:1 pistons almost new and quite cheap, I had intended to put them on H23 rods to achieve a compression of 10.2:1 (according to the zeal calculator) and then mild boost, the engine belongs in my DD..my concern is I have read on this and other forums that these pistons wear out after about 30k miles and I drive between 20 and 30k a year..so now I am considering the darton dry flanged sleeves (closed deck block and not enough capital for MID's

So can anyone give me any ideas if thats realistic? only 30k on performance pistons? or is that old info and they have been improved? I dont really trust mahle or a mahle dealer as they could just be trying to sell their product..I want to hear from people who have put mileage on these pistons

Thanks
Johnathan

I have put quite a few miles on my engine how many I do not know. I do know that I beat the crap out of it on the street and at the track all the time. If sleeveing your block is a option I would deft go with that because then you are making it bullet proof like

Well its just the dry sleeves, Not the super strong MID style, but it is a closed deck block, but id rather use the pistons I already have rather than having to sell them and get sleeves and still need different pistons (A mahle retailer informed me the gold series pistons cant be used in regular iron sleeves..is that correct?)

Anyone looking for a set of 11.5:1''s almost new?..lol

No more Mahle's for me. Got the itch for more HP so I am sleeving the block. I am selling my Mahles with eagle rods if any of you guys are intrested. Just PM me and we can work something out. There is nothing wrong with my block when I pulled it out, I going all out with this build. 9:1 compression Mahle Golds with eagle rods
