Default ebay turbos?

What's so bad about them? I've just recently started reading up on turbos so im still noob. I know they're not top quality, but what if you just replace the BOV and wastegate with quality ones, it shouldn't be too bad right? Plus it should be cheaper to replace parts.
It's a lot of money saved imo.

ah, ok good. All I'm looking for is "ok" power anyway. That's why I don't want to spend ALOT when I'm only going to get a little.

I say no need. We can get you Precision Turbos with 1 year Warranty for as low as $599. Why take the risk you know.

you can pretty much slap any turbo on any engine if you got the right manifold and space

btw my last ebay turbo lasted a dyno tune and about 200 miles on the road

If you don't have the money to buy even a quality used turbo then honestly you shouldn't be turboing a car. The issue with them is the reliability and the uncertainty if you got a friday turbo or a monday turbo. Some last (supposedly), and some dont and theres no way to tell either way

heres what i observed.

i have 2 turbos. both garrets 60trims.

my cousin just recently bought an ebay turbo kit. he is aware of the turbo and waste gate and stuff that can seriously mess up his motor. but he thinks that its a good start for a noob. i told him that he should piece a quality kit and do it that way. but i guess he just wants to do this " for now:"

so he received his kit and i look at it. right out the box. what i noticed. now the setup came with a log manifold and if i was to attached the turbo to the manifold. looking at the turbo, the oil feed hole is pretty big compared to the opposite side (under) which the hole is smaller than the size of a dime.

if im correct the oil return hole is bigger than the oil feed. how this turbo came out the box, it seems like its setup for a top mount but its not..so the ebay turbo is just setup completely wrong since its a kit with a log manifold. mistake 1.

mistake 2. i further looked into his kit and i came across the oil feed adapter that attaches to the turbo for the line. now the nipple side for the line is the correct sized hole. but the opposite side of the adapter where the oil comes out the hole into the turbo..the hole is the size of a damn push pin needle..no way it will feed enough oil to the turbo.

conclusion. since people go the route of buying ebay kit, i figure they are super happy to go turbo for a low cost and have everything to install in that kit. i dont know if the buyers of ebay kits take good looks at the kit like i did and notice all the imperfections. i assume since they have the kit, they want it on and go vroom psh asap. so without inspecting everything they install it.

now i think what causes the death of ebay turbo is..IF your turbo came manufactured backwards like ours did..the oil blew out the seals due to the oil not flowing freely out the "return" hole cause of the small hole that was positioned there. or caused the seized up internals of the turbo due to the lack of oil cause i know damn well the pin sized hole isnt gonna feed the turbo what it needs to keep lubricated..

now i had made all the corrections to my cousins kit. i clocked the turbine to have the bigger hole at the bottom and smaller on top. i got him another adapter for the feed from one of my garrets and it sure does look different.

we wont know how long this turbo will last with the corrections we did. but we will see. also when the turbo does go out, backup garret and waste gate is waiting.

i will post pix when i get the chance. i didnt have a camera at the time.

It could of been an oil restrictor.

Clocking so that the oil runs the "wrong way" through the turbo isnt a smart thing to do, because the CHRA oil channel is shaped to flow to a certain direction.

you always have to clock the turbo when you're using a bottom mount manifold. everyone does it, and every precision turbo i've bought comes like that. the death of those turbos is poor quality control/horrible manufacturing/design. but if you are paying may $200 for a turbo when most good ones go for $600+, i wouldn't have high hopes.

guys im only saying what I THINK causes the death of an ebay turbo based on the comparison i did with my garret turbo. i will have to take a closer look at it and i will get some pix to show you what i mean..

can you explain to me what an oil restrictor is? im still kinda new to turbo (not that of a noob though) i mean the pin sized hole on the adapter is so small how can the weight of the oil go through that?

Do you really need a definition of what an oil restrictor does? it restricts oil.

Really it reduces the pressure the chra sees by not allowing as much oil into it.

How can the oil go through it? Its pressurized, it will spray through there trust me. Now whether or not it was the correct diameter, I dont know.

You can "clock" the housings so that you have return/feed holes sit in certain positions depending on your setup.

That feed adapter is an oil restrictor.

well my cars cousin turbo has been in his car for about 2 months now. i had drilled out that pin hole on his adaptor that was suppose to be the restictor. the person who put it in (RNR) was also wondering why there was 2 restictor as well and he said what i had done will work just fine. so far no problems.

I had an ebay turbo on my ls 150 bucks i think it was. it was on my b18 for 3 months... sold the car about a year ago and turbo still has no shaft play or leaks. (i still talk to the guy).. I expected the turbo to at the least blow a seal after about a week or so lol it was on ten lbs when i had it. Maybe a luck game but if you want reliability spent the extra money. im going garret next time.
