Crazy Tach Needle, Breaking Up, Igniter or Coil? Trigger Adapter Circuit
EDIT!!!!!!!
Pictures of solution on page 2!
Search function isn't working so don't gimme that ****!
Driving my hatch last night on the way home from a test run, the car started bucking and it was like the ignition was breaking up a little bit. It got worse so I really started babying the car, then I noticed my Tach needle was going nuts. I was also datalogging then and the computer was not recording any of the crazy tachometer stuff on the virtual dash. Well it got real bad then the car just died and I rolled off into a parking lot.
Had to walk 5 miles home in the 40* weather, haha.
Just wondering if you think it'd be the ignitor or the coil or what.
Here's a little about my car [if you're too lazy to click the link in my sig]:
-B18A1 w/ OBD-1 Distributor
-Stock Honda Ignition
-NGK wires
-BKR7E Plugs @ 0.028"
-Hondata S200B
Do you think an ignitor or coil from an OBD-1 D-Series distributor will work...I've got one of those!

Re: Crazy Tach Needle, Breaking Up, Ignitor or Coil? (DaX)
I think it might work cause i have swapped dizzy caps between the b and d obdl, i might be wrong but i believe the coil should also fit. btw I've been following on you car and it's nice to see people have faith on those Ls motors

yes its prolly the ignitor....Mine went out 3 times in a year and this was the exact same sympton...
The dealer wanted a grip for a new one so I bought a new dizzy from Distributor King for a few bucks more...(new cap, ignitor, rotor, housing, everything)
Ive used Accord and D-series ignitors even though they have dif part #'s, and they all worked fine...
Mine kept going bad because I removed the little shield behind the rotor. Thought it was just a dust shield but apparently it helps keep the spark from straying off and zapping the ignitor.
When the coil goes out, your car will not run at all.

also try looking into a ground issue. look at the ground on the thermostat housing if thats loose it will do the same thing.

Re: (Tchleung)
You know I had an ignitor go out a while back and I ended up just picking up a new dizzy at the junkyard.
But I was wondering, is there a reliable aftermarket replacement available? Not necesarily any sort of upgrade, just a factory replacement.

Well we used my brother's distributor to get the car home [he's got an LS also], so it's not any ground issues. My friend luckily has a lifetime warranty @ AutoZone on a 94 Integra LS distributor, so I'm just going to go get a new one tonight.
Thanks for the props, JdmEKCivic.
Does anyone see any benefit in upgrading to an MSD external coil and cap, or does that require still using the stock ignitor, still making that the weak point and not helping anything? Is there any solution to this other than a crazy amount of money in ignition upgrade?

Well you can run just the cap and ex coil but that will shorten the life of you ignitor even more, and no you still use the same ignitor setup. Msd doesn't recommend using a ex coil without the box.

When you upgrade to an external coil, you still retain the stock ignitor. from my experiences, the stock ignitor jsut seems to go even faster when you have everything else juiced up I think the only alternative is convert to direct ignition system. hehe

Re: (Tchleung)
Yea the ignitor will cause that..Msd ignitions **** them up even more often...you should be able to use any of the single cam ****. The delaer charges way to much for them as is....

Well I've been reading around, and some guys are bypassing the stock ignitor using a solid state circuit that seems easy enough to build. The only problem is that I think I'll also need to upgrade to an MSD ignition, which is $$. For the time being, I'm going to use the D-Series ignitor. I can't swing a few hundred dollars for an MSD unit/coil/cap.

Re: (DaX)
I just can't understand why there isn't some sort of cheap ignitor replacement available. I think I might call my friend tomorrow who rebuilds alternators, starters, dizzys etc. to see where they source their parts.

Well if anyone is interested in how I'm going to go about bypassing the stock ignitor [ICM] and coil, here goes:
For the coil bypass I'm going to use the MSD 6A with Blaster SS coil. I don't need anything fancy that can retard timing or do 2 step or any of that **** since I already have Hondata which is capable of all that. The MSD 6A is the most basic unit.
To use just the 6A, you must use your stock ignitor. To bypass the ignitor in conjunction with the 6A, you've got to build this little circuit:
http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin...ement
I'll post up pictures of it when I build it. I had to order the ZTX857 transistor from Digikey.com because NONE of the local electronics stores in my area [ATL] carry it. All the rest of the stuff I can get from ACK Radio here in Atlanta.
